ANAYA

As we reached the address Arnav told me about in the streets of Tokyo, I saw the house where my mother lives. As I rang the doorbell, my hands started shaking in nervousness. Arnav gently held my hand and passed me a comforting smile. Though it didn't help my anxiety, it relieved me a bit.

The floor flew open and a boy in his teenage stared back at me. Did we come to the wrong address?

"We're here to meet your mother." Arnav told the boy and he nodded, letting us enter inside.

I looked at Arnav in confusion. Why did he say to him that we're here to meet his mother? I mean we're here to meet my mother, right?

We both sat on the couch and I waited impatiently to know that what's happening here?

From upstairs a woman came down with a huge smile on her face. She looked both at me and Arnav and sat across us. "How may I help you?"

My breath caught up in my throat and I couldn't help but feel tears streaming down my face. I've finally met her. I've finally met my mother. Look at her, she's happy. She's smiling.

"Mum, didn't you recognize me?" I asked, trying my best to stop the tears but all in vain.

As soon as she heard me, the smile from her face disappeared and all she did was to stare at me.

"Aren't you happy to see me? I'm your Anaya. You told me that one day you'd come to me but look I came to you. I'm so happy that you're-"

"Why are you here?" She cut me in middle.

"Huh?"

She sighed and turned to look at the teenage boy who was busy looking at us. "You should go to your room."

"You told me that both your ex husband and daughter are dead. Then what's she doing here?" He asked, giving me weird expressions.

Dead?

What are they talking about?

"It's been so many years, why are you here? Who told you to come here? And for god's sake, don't look at me so helplessly. I'm no longer your mother, our relationship had ended many years back. Now you're nothing to me but a stranger." She said in a hollow tone.

I didn't believe my ears. I blinked twice to see if she's joking but her face held seriousness.

My heart fell into the pits of my stomach and a sudden nausea hit me. It felt as my whole life has been turned upside down.

"You told me that you'd come for me...." I whispered.

Arnav held me and stated rubbing my back. "Breathe, Anaya." He told me.

"Don't you know the kind of life I had back then? You weren't that small to not understand, do you? I suffered every night, every day. It was hell from me. You have no idea that what I went through." She spat.

My head started ponding harder and it became almost unbearable for me to process anything. "And what about me? Don't you think that I suffered too?" I asked, on the verge of crying fresh tears.

"Your father would never harm you; I know that already. What else could you have suffered? Don't tell me that your step mother didn't love you at all that you came all the way here in search of me?" She said, rubbing her forehead in annoyance.

I sank on my seat not being able to take her harsh word. "Look, Arnav, she's telling me that I didn't suffer at all. How could she say this to me? H-how? I spend my whole life with a hope that one day I'll find her but look how she's behaving with me." I turned to Arnav and shuttered, holding his collar.

He wiped my tears and turned to my mother. "Ma'am, please talk to her politely. You've no idea what she's been through. I request you to be kind with her. She just had a surgery, please be easy on her."

"And who are you?" She asked, now softening her expressions.

"I am her husband." He told her.

She nodded. "Then why don't you make your wife understand that I'm no longer the person she used to know. I've moved on in my life and so should she. There's no need for her to get emotional over thing that happened more than decade ago. I've a family now and I'm happy in my life. My husband loves me and I have son who adores me, I've started a new life after getting out of that hell hole. Please let her know that I'm happy with my new life and I don't want to have connection with anyone of my past. I don't want to ruin what I have for what I had. Getting out of an abusive marriage was so hard for me but somehow, I managed. I know your wife must be hating me right now but the truth is we're stranger now. The bond we had in the past is already broken. My family would not like if I go back to my past. My husband had a tough time to mend my broken heart, I don't want to hurt him."

"Am I really going to die?" I asked.

“You've twenty four hours before I collect your soul and take it to the hell.” He said, looking at my body lying on hospital bed in coma.

I nodded, not knowing how to react.

“What's going to happen to me after you take me hell?” I couldn't help but ask.

“You'll be punished according to your sin then your soul would be ceased to exist.” He replied in a monotonous voice.

I don't want to die, not yet.

“And what am I going to do for next twenty four hours?”

“Demand your last wish. Since it was my mistake to make you die twenty four hours before your original time of death. I'd compensate it by fulfilling your wish.”

I looked straight into his hollow eyes and said. “I want to fall in love.”

He stared at my face and gave a curt nod.

“With you.” I added.
