At first, these headcanons were supposed to be well written (as if I was giving a lesson of sorts) but now I feel like they look more like me rambling about some aspects of the HCs. It's fine, the information are still the same no matter how they're presented.

Warning : some of these HC tackle serious topics (like, there's a bit of child abuse and mention of nazism at some point) and it's supposed to have some ties with history (and I hope it's accurate enough or else I would be very disappointed in myself).

Story of the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine

Alsace-Lorraine is the descendant of the Alsatian and Lorraine bloodline, descending from the Duchy of Lorraine, himself descendant of Lotharingia.

In the context of the annexation of 1871, she was taken under the German Empire's authority with a part of her territory ; the two Alsatian departments Haut Rhin and Bas Rhin and Moselle, one out of the four Lorrainer departments.

She represents the part of her population that did not agreed with their belonging to the German Empire, therefore she was pushed by the latter to stay with him, made to live in a single wooden house in a quite isolated rural part of her land, which represents the oppression felt by being owned by the empire. She was forced to learn German, as he only allowed her to speak his language in his presence, though she haven't lost part of the mainly French culture she was educated in.

Due to her reluctance toward the German Empire, the sort of relationship that was forced onto her was quite awkward. She ended up rather neutral toward him, even though she was still blaming him for forcing her and her three departments, which she haven't seen since the annexation, to be part of his empire.

The relationship took another turn when they had non-consented sex which resulted in the existence of two accidental daughters : Alsace and Lorraine, in 1901, representing nowadays regions and how the German culture mixed with theirs. Alsace-Lorraine had the burden of raising them, she took advantage of it to teach them French, in case they were taken back by France one day, and other elements of her former culture. It didn't bother the German Empire, she could raise them however she wanted as long as they were speaking German and behaving in a German way near him.

Alsace-Lorraine passed away from unknown reasons in 1917, leaving the two daughters taking her place. The German Empire took advantage of it to dissociate both of them from the German bloodline, making them the heirs of their mother only. Because of that, when France demanded Alsace-Lorraine back in 1919, he had to give his two illegitimate daughters instead to replace the deceased region.

Alsace and Lorraine may be sisters yet they never liked each other. By being two different individuals, they made the Alsatian and Lorrainer bloodline split up once again (and according to their relationship, the two bloodlines will most likely never merge again). Alsace is the one looking and behaving the most like her father (representing how Alsatian people at the time were still considered as Germans by the rest of the French even though they became French again). It got her to face some form of discrimination from the anti-German propaganda fed to the French since 1870 (people of Alsace-Moselle lived through some kind of discrimination especially in this period, it still is the case but way less worse than it once was). Only owning Haut Rhin and Bas Rhin didn't help her to be "more French" so even when she adapted to the culture, her German part stayed pretty visible, especially as she spoke the Alsatian dialect, being very Germanic.

Lorraine, as for her, completely embraced her French side by mainly staying with the three departments that had remained within France's belonging ; Meurthe, now called Meurthe-et-Moselle after the annexation, Meuse and Vosges. Her relationship with Moselle wasn't very positive, though they could stay neutral for business purposes. There is no apparent reason why Lorraine is this way with Moselle, it may be because the latter shares a few characteristics with the German Empire.
