"AND SO IN SHORT, VALERIAN TRIED TO kill us," Jude explained hastily, finishing her retelling of the tale to Locke. Allura hangs back awkwardly ━━━━━ feeling as though she is trespassing onto their moment. But Jude had insisted she come with. And so they made their way through the Crooked Forest where the trees all bow in the same direction; as though they had been blown that way by a gust of wind ever since they were saplings. Sometimes, she will stop to pick the blackberries from prickly stems in the shrubs between them. Jude does the same up ahead, and she blows away the tiny sugar ants that she finds upon them. Allura, however, allows them to crawl in a stampede across her fingertips before plopping them back down on the leaves. When Jude offers Locke a berry, he demures. "And I stabbed him."

Locke's fox eyes grow steady on Jude.

"You stabbed Valerian."
