I heard a loud sound in my mothers room, I woke up to see what the problem was as I rubbed my sleepy eyes. My mother was screaming but it sounded like it was a struggle in there, I used my butter knife to unlock my mothers door...to find her laying on the bed being raped and choked to death by my mean step father her eyes were bleeding from the circulation being cut off her throat
"Mama!!!! Nia screamed you okay get off her getaway from her! Stop you're hurting her!
The only way to calm him down was to call him "dad" even though he was not my biological dad he was my mothers husband but something about that word made him stop and think but tonight it didn't work because he was very drunk he continued to throw mama on to the floor stomping her and slapping her in the face I ran over to her and protected mama But he threw me to the floor and held a gun to my mama head
That's when the police arrived trying to take me away, I fleed to my childhood friend house in my apartment complex Dave i knocked on the door frantically and frightened looking around patiently waiting for him to open it
He opened the door wearing his cartoon pajamas "Hey nia what are you doing here this late I was sleeping u ok?"

"There trying to take me away Dave the police! I don't want to go back to foster care again"
Being with Dave was like her safe haven they grew up in the same projects but the difference was he had strict loving parents who never argued or anything I felt safe there and whenever mama would fight with her husband I would sneak away to his house as a child.

That's when the police arrived knocked on the door and took nia out of his little arms...
"Nia I will call you everyday!" Dave shouted as his parents comforted him as they took nia away that's when she promised herself that when she grew up she would become somebody great.
