Eddie stuck by my side for the remainder of the school day, and insisted that, in the classes that he wasn't in, I utilize my friendship with Steve Harrington as a way to ensure David would stay away from me. He still didn't believe me, that Steve had changed, but he said if I believed it then he would trust my judgment.

In one such class, we ended up having a study hall, and as soon as I saw that Riley wasn't in her usual seat beside Steve, I rushed over to fill it before David spotted me alone for too long and tried to accost me again.

"Hey," I greeted, "Is Riley not sitting here?"

"No, she had a doctor's appointment." He said, gesturing for me to take the seat.

"Is everything ok?" I questioned, doing just that. He nodded.

"Yeah, I think so," He replied, "She said it wasn't anything serious."

I nodded, leaning down and pulling my notebook out of my backpack as he kept his eyes on the homework he had on the desk in front of him.

"You guys are pretty close now, huh?" I questioned, propping my chin in one hand and poising my pencil to write in the other.

"Yeah, I guess," He said with a shrug, "I mean...she's kind of my best friend if I'm being totally honest." I smiled.

"Well, that much is obvious," I said simply. "You two are attached at the hip these days. I feel like I see you with her more than I see you with your girlfriend."

"That's not true," he said quickly,"It's just that Nancy's a year younger so she's in different classes. Riley and I just basically have the same schedule."

"Relax Harrington. I wasn't accusing you of anything." I chuckled. "Should I be accusing you of something?"

"No! No, of course not...Riley's just...a friend. She's my best friend but... that's it. I swear." I nodded.

"If you say so, then I believe you." I replied, looking down at the doodles in my notebook.

"Why wouldn't I say so?" He asked. "Wait, why wouldn't you believe me, what have you heard?!"

"Nothing! Geez Steve, paranoid much?" He shook his head and I laughed, tucking my hair behind my ear. "I just...I don't know, I couldn't help but notice how...protective you got about that new kid staring at her in Math today."

"Well yeah. Did you see the new kid? He's a jerk-off, its written all over his face," he argued,"like I said, Riley's my best friend and she's...special. She deserves someone who knows and appreciates that...the way that she deserves. So I'm looking out for her, that's all. As her friend."

"Ah ok. That makes sense." I said with a nod before reaching over and snapping the black hair tie on his wrist. "What's that?"

"Its Riley's hair tie." He answered nonchalantly, causing me to burst out laughing again.

"You're wearing her hair tie and you're sitting here trying to say you're not into her?!" I exclaimed.

"I'm not! I'm just trying to be a good friend!" He argued. "What?! Her neck gets hot so she likes to wear her hair up but she has this habit of losing hair ties and snapping them and having none left, so she forgot this one on her desk and I'm just holding onto it in case she needs it."

I shot him a look.

"I'm in love with Nancy!" He argued. "I love Nancy, that's who I care about, that's who I'm dating, there is no one else."

"Ok...good to know. Glad we had this talk. " I said skeptically, nodding as I suppressed a smile.

"Ok then, what's the deal with you and Eddie Munson, since you want to talk about love lives so badly." I furrowed my eyebrows.
