ALEX

Luke, Natalie, Lizzie, Shawn and I walk through the empty hallways of our school.

Are we in the right place?

Is the prom even happening?

We can hear the loud thumping of music from near the gym and there are multicolored beams of light creeping out of the gap between the doors of the gym which are only halfway closed.

A constant murmur of a lot of people talking at the same time and occasional cheers reach me from inside the gym.

Ok, so the party must be there.

I know I must be grateful for what I have, but I don't really like how slow I am at processing certain things.

We head towards the gym.

Luke pushes the doors open and we see a lot of people shuffling on the floor to some weird 2016 phonk music with a fast beat.

There's a DJ that we've never seen before on a makeshift podium fiddling with his box thing and with the every little adjustment he looks up at the crowd hunting for approval.

When did they start the dance?

"WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST HAVE A SIT-DOWN DINNER OR SOMETHING AT SOME NICE RESTAURANT?" Lizzie yells so that we could hear over the loud music.

"SOME KIDS GOT OBSESSED WITH THE 80s AND THEY CONVINCED THEIR MOMS TO VOTE FOR A PROM IN THE SCHOOL GYM. I AM ONE OF THEM. WHY YOU DON'T LIKE IT?" Natalie shouts while replying to Lizzie.

"I WOULD PREFER A SIT-IN DINNER BECAUSE I CAN'T REALLY DANCE OR SWAY OR WHATEVER WE'RE SUPPOSED TO DO HERE, BUT NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT, I PREFER THIS BECAUSE I'M SURE I WOULD SPILL SOMETHING ON MY DRESS IF IT WAS A DINNER AND I WOULD HATE MYSELF FOREVER IF I DID SOMETHING TO THIS DRESS." Lizzie yells back.

"DO YOU HAVE ANY ALCOHOL HERE WITH YOU TODAY?" a female voice yells from behind us.

We turn around.

It's Miss Sands, the sex-ed teacher.

"NO, WE'RE NOT CARRYING ANYTHING HERE." Shawn shouts back.

"DID YOU GUYS DECLARE THE PROM KING AND QUEEN YET?" Luke asks.

"YES WE DID. YOU'RE A HALF-HOUR LATE. MISS BACHELET AND MR. MCRORY WON." Miss Sands says pointing to the illuminated area near the podium were all the popular people were huddled.

That explains why they started the dance.

That's why there was nobody in the hallways.

They had started the dance so nobody wanted to miss it.

"THANK YOU, MISS SANDS." Natalie says.

Miss Sands nods and turns around and goes out of the gym through the door that she came in.

"HEY." a male voice says from my right.

I turn my head to my right to look at the owner of the voice.

It's Cain.

"HEY, YOU LOOK HANDSOME." I say.

He really does.

He is wearing a black suit-jacket with a white shirt inside but with no tie.

He is wearing black formal pants with a belt and black shoes.

His muscular frame is clearly visible.

"THIS IS MY DATE." Cain points to a cute, short guy standing beside him in his left.
