The next day
9 am
Me and Rebecca were going to the med today. Todays the day. On our way we dropped Liam off at school. After a short drive we arrived at med. when we walked in I saw Will
Jay: Hey you going home?
Will: Yep just got off so gonna go sleep. I checked on Donte and he was fine.
Jay: okay thanks will see ya
We then walked up to Dontes room where we saw Dr Charles.
Jay: hey Dr Charles
Dr Charles: hey Jay. Will gave me the test yesterday by the way.
Jay: that's good
Rebecca: oh yeah here
Rebecca handed over hers
Dr Charles: Thanks I'll be back in soon to help Donte do his.
Dr Charles left so we sat down and was on our phones.
10 am
Donte woke up
Jay: hey buddy
Rebecca: hey honey
Donte: hi
Jay: you okay?
Donte: mhm
Jay: remember you got Dr Charles appointment then your free to go home.
Donte: yeah
Connor walked in
Connor: how are we?
Donte: good
Connor: good to hear. Any pain?
Donte: nada
Connor: that's good.
Connor left and Dr Charles entered.
Dr Charles: hi Donte
Donte: hi
Dr Charles: do you wanna follow me?
Donte: sure?
Jay: it's okay

We walked to his office where he sits me down to do a test on what I struggle with. Within two hours I finish it. It was a disaster. It was so boring so I fidgeted so much and forgot what question I was on so had to go back and find it.
Donte: Are we finished?
Dr Charles: We have one more thing to do. Do you wanna have a break?
Donte: yeah can I go get some food?
Dr Charles: sure come back up when you're done.
I went to the cafeteria and saw uncle Will.
Donte: hey uncle Will I thought you went home
Will: I did but I came back for shift
Donte: oh. Uncle Will?
Will: yeah trouble
Donte: can you get me something?
Will: sure kiddo what you want?
Donte: urm Mac and cheese please
Will: cool.
Uncle Will bought it and brought it to a table. We ended up eating lunch together.
Donte: thank you
Will: No problem trouble. How's it going with Dr Charles?
Donte: shit it took me 2 hours to do some stupid test on paper and now I have to do another test.
Will: it will be worth it in the end
Donte: I guess
We finish our food
Will: come on I'll walk you up.
We both walk to Dr Charles' office.
Dr Charles: you ready?
Donte: I guess
Uncle Will went back to the ED.
1pm
Donte: what is this test?
Dr Charles: I'm gonna put these sticky things on your head, legs and arms. They connect to a machine and it's going to keep track of your movement. Your then gonna watch two videos. One will be boring and the other you'll like. Each video is half an hour long.
Donte: okay
He began putting the sticky things on. They felt so strange. He then sat me down infront of a screen and pressed play on the first video. It was about American history. It was so boring. 30 minutes of nonstop torture. I was tapping my feet on the floor , my fingers on the table and I constantly changing how I was seated. I did this for the whole 30 minutes.
Dr Charles: alright that's it now onto the next one
Thank fuck. He put on the next one. It was Chicago bulls vs charlotte hornets. I actually sat and watched. I liked watching Lonzo vs LaMelo. In my opinion Melo is way better but wouldn't be as good as he is without Lonzo. I was barely fidgeting compared to the last video. Before I knew it the time was up.
Dr Charles: times up kid. Right let's go to your parents.
He took the sticky things off and collected up all his papers and the results from the machine. We made our way back down to my room where mum and dad were waiting with Connor
Connor: Your a free man. Whenever your ready you can go.
Donte: thanks Connor
Connor left
Dr Charles: I'm looking at the results from all three tests and the computer one we just did as well as the report. I have enough evidence to diagnose him with severe ADHD. I'm gonna prescribe some Adderall which should tone down his symptoms. I will also send the school an email with a support plan so the correct arrangements can be put in place to help him.
Dad: thanks Dr Charles
Mama: yeah thank you so much
Dr Charles then left and I zoned out.
So I'm not just a bad behaved kid. There is actually a reason I am the way I am. I know this is supposed to be good news but right now I feel so angry. Angry at myself. Angry at my teachers. Just generally angry. My parents for years were saying that there was a possibility that I have ADHD because I act exactly like dad did. But everyone else kept on labelling me as a bad kid. Trouble maker. Delinquent. You name it 9 times out of 10 I've been called it.
Dad: come on buddy let's go home
Donte: can we get McDonald's
Dad: sure why not
Donte: yes
Mama: okay okay
We stopped off at the pharmacy to get my prescription, then McDonald's. Last stop home.

For the rest of the week I was switching between the firehouse and the district. Today is the last day of my suspension.

Friday morning
Liam left early for school cause he had morning practice. Me and and dad were sitting at the kitchen island eating our breakfast.
Mama: meds?
Both: yup
Mama: we have a meeting with the principal today at 12 so when you're finished go get ready.
Donte: okay.
Mama went to get ready while me and dad finished our breakfast.
Dad: you excited to go back?
Donte: I don't know.
Dad: you'll be fine.
Donte: mhm
We finish our breakfast and get ready.
Mum: hurry up we're gonna be late.
Mama: coming
We made our way to school. We arrived and was greeted by the principal.
Principal: good afternoon
All: afternoon
We walked down to the office
Principal: so Monday your suspension is lifted. But I have to warn you this will be your very last chance.
Donte: mhm
Principal: so I see he received the diagnosis
Dad: yep
Principal: well I have been sent a support plan to help him. Obviously we'll need your input aswell.
Dad: mhm
Principal: so as you can see here this is the plan that we were sent. We can adjust this accordingly and finalise it.

The principal showed us the plan
Donte Halstead support plan revisited
Conditions: ADHD, Dyslexia
For assignments, quizzes and tests
Donte should receive 50% extra time and regular test breaks. A peach overlay should always be given but if not available then any handouts should be printed on peach coloured paper. He may use a reading pen. A laptop may be used
In lessons
allow opportunities for him to move about. Give him a peach overlay or print handouts on peach coloured handouts. Break down work into smaller parts. To reduce external distraction seat him in the front row. Develop a private signal to refocus attention. Include rewards.

The plan looks good. I guess we'll try it and see if there's any improvement.

Fast forward
Donte pov
It is now the end of the semester and it has gone pretty well. I get in less trouble than I used to but sometimes have my bad days. I still haven't got a full week without any crosses. Hey can't be perfect:). I lost interest in baseball again so it's still soccer and basketball. Next semester I will be on a 6 week probation because I will be starting my full timetable. During this time I will still be on behaviour report.
