CHAPTER FOURTEEN

They had stopped at a carpark with tons of cars to siphon gas out of. Ellie spoke bored that this was the third time they had stopped since they had left, Violet stood aside quiet, still shook from the panic attack she had, she hadn't had one in years, she hated the feeling. No control. She hated it.

"We have to do this every hour?"

Joel explained to the girls,

"Gas breaks down over time.
This stuff's almost water.
Back in the day, we'd drive 10, 12 hours on one tank.
You could go anywhere."

Lily asked Joel, while sending worried glances at her sister. She had only seen Violet get that bad twice, once after Lily was hurt badly and once now, she hid it well.

"So where'd you go?"

Joel answered saying he really went nowhere. He wasn't rich growing up or even when he was an adult. Ellie exclaimed and then questioned,

"Nice! How does that work? It's a siphon."

Violet smirked at Joel wondering what he was gonna make up, or how he was gonna answer. To be honest she had no idea how it worked either. Joel spoke unsure,

"It's when liquid... travels against gravity because pressure..."

Violet laughed before teasing the grumpy man,

"You don't know."

Joel scoffed defending himself,

"I know it works."

Ellie and Lily laughed as they went to explore, Joel snapping quickly getting them to hold in their place.

"No wandering."

Lily brought her hand to her head and saluted causing Ellie to crack up and Violet coughed covering up a laugh. Ellie smirked at Violet and Joel, Violet worried at the cheeky look on her face,

"This is your fault then."

She unzipped her backpack and pulled out a joke book. Violet rolling her eyes at the gesture, while Lily clapped excited.

"It doesn't matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery." "No Pun Intended, Volume Too" by Will Livingston. "Volume Too." Look. You get it?
"Too"? Like, T-o-o.
Jesus."
