If a compass no longer points north, it is hardly fair to call it a compass. The very intention of the invention is to give one direction. When the core value is stripped, does it have a purpose? If a brain is washed of memories, goals, and relationships, is it still the original person? If the brain of a person is removed, who is the lifeless body? Is the identity of an object centered around the physical being of its existence or the purpose it serves?

When WCKD wipes memories, how does the subject react? But of course, one must consider the things they didn't take. Language and your name were given. Surely your voice was your own but did you preach the same morals? But with no natural behavior or life lessons from experience, are your morals even the same? If a boy was afraid of spiders before the maze, would spiders still be a threat or would he forget that too?

Or maybe identity is entrusted to those around you, how they perceive and care for you. Surely they could pick you out of a crowd, making you recognizable. Does what give you identity? Is Bruce Wayne and Batman the same identity? If so, if Robin put on the suit, is he now Batman?

When Fiona's memories were wiped the first time, she woke up fighting. When WCKD infiltrated her mind again, she might still be Fiona but would she be 'Blue'?
