You groaned, mumbling profanities under your breath as you stood facing a door. Behind it, your teacher stood waiting. It will be like your usual routine. You'd enter, greet her with a smile, and tell her that you practiced. She will then lead you to the center of the room where you'd sit on a chair and position your violin.

You didn't want to learn the violin. You much preferred the guitar, but your parents insisted, saying that violin was 'much more elegant'.

Inside the room you could hear someone playing the piano. Probably your teacher.

You knocked briefly on the wooden door and pushed it open, freezing once your eyes fell on a girl.

She looked about your age, and she was definitely not your teacher, because your teacher was standing right behind her.

Her pale skin gleamed as the sunlight kissed it, her delicate hands floating on the piano keys. Her sharp eyes were focused on the instrument beneath her, not even realizing you were in the room. As she pressed the last note of the song, your teacher beckoned you over with a hand.

"Ah, Y/N. Good, good. This is Dahyun."

Dahyun saw you, a smile lighting up her pretty face. "Hello."

You bowed shyly, returning her greeting.

"So, you know about this upcoming contest this month, right?" Both you and Dahyun nodded. "Good. I was asked if I could have some students of mine for a special performance. So.. I chose you two."

Your eyebrows raised in disbelief. "Me?" you pointed at yourself.

Your teacher smiled slightly. "Yes. I know that it wasn't really your choice to learn, but you're really good. And Dahyun here is one of my best students."

The mentioned girl blushed.

"Yes," the teacher continued. "So I wanted you two to collaborate for the festival, if that is okay?"

You shot her a thumbs up and a determined nod. "Of course, Ms. Lee. What song are we learning?"

"Come over here."

~~~~~~~~~
So that was how you met. Ms. Lee had decided on Christina Perri's 'A Thousand Years'. You were kind of nervous, but Dahyun's energy and (sometimes lame) jokes cheered you up.
In no time the two of you grew to be close friends, what with seeing each other almost daily to practice an almost 5 minute song. You agreed to divide the singing lines.
And then time sped up and you were standing in front of a large audience. Among them, you spotted your parents, your father dabbing at fake tears with his handkerchief. You stifled a laugh at the way your mother scolded him before glancing at Dahyun, who nodded and started playing.
The music enveloped you instantly, like it always did when you played. Although you initially didn't like it, you'd learned to love the violin because you connected it to seeing Dahyun who, little by little, grew on you.
You felt like you were floating, like you were flying, as if nothing else mattered but you two on the stage. It didn't feel like any eyes were on you at all. To you, you were just letting out your emotions through the form of a melody.
~~~~~~~~~

But then the skies turned dark and you started falling from your dreams. Suddenly the world seemed to have turned on you because now you were unemployed and alone. You skipped meals several times a week because of lack of money. You stopped playing violin because there was no time; your days were filled with fruitless attempt at getting jobs.

And what's worse is that you don't have Dahyun beside you anymore. Just a couple of years since you met she moved to study overseas. You didn't know what's going on in her life right now, but you were sure as heck she was having a better time than you.

You just hoped she didn't forget you, because every night your mind was plagued by images of her.

You sighed and rested your head tiredly against your grimy apartment window. It was lucky the woman who owned it was nice; she allowed you to pay rent a few months late. Your eyes strayed to the violin case that lay dejectedly, begging to be played at least once more.

So you picked it up and headed outside. Maybe, just this time, you'd perform and hope someone throws you a bill. If it doesn't work, then you'd never play again.

The sun was shining brightly, which was in contrast to your current mood. You sat down on a wooden bench in the middle of the park and took out your instrument, taking a deep breath before playing the first song you ever performed.

Once again you were wrapped in the melody and you forgot why you were doing it in the first place.

Oh, how you wished to perform with your girl again, standing on the stage as crowds screamed your names.

You were interrupted by the sound of a few coins dropping into your hat and someone clear their throat. You pursed your lips and tried not to show your annoyance, about to thank them with a big smile before realizing who it was.

"Dahyun?" you said with your mouth agape. She nodded, her eyebrows raising in surprise.

"You remember me?"

"How could I not?! You.. I.."

What are you supposed to say to a person you haven't seen for a long time?

Especially if they were the person who took your heart.

"Shall we grab a coffee?" you offered, embarrassingly forgetting that you had no money to feed yourself, let alone treat her.

But she seemed to read your mind. "I'll pay. It's been a while, Y/N."
