Couple of months later.....Ruby was graduating in two days and I couldn't be more happy for her. For the last few months, I've watched her work her ass off. She seemed to be nervous about something though. Whenever I asked if she was okay, she would just say she's fine.
We were lying on the bed, staring at the ceiling, when she looked at me.
"Can I ask you something?""You can ask me anything Ruby." I tell her and she took a deep breath.
"What's it like when you change? The process I mean. I feel like I should know so I'm prepared." She said in a low voice and I debated if I should tell her or not, because it honestly isn't a walk in the park so to speak.
"I don't want to scare you." I tell her and watched as she searched my face.
"I can take it. Tell me." She said, lacing her fingers in mine.
"Well I've never changed anyone obviously but from my own experience, what I felt, was extremely....painful."
"On a scale of 1-10, what would you rate it?" She asked gesturing with her fingers, jokingly.
"Let's just say it's painful enough that you'll wish for death instead." I say.
"Is that what happened to you?"
"More or less. I didn't understand what was happening to me. I was fine, walking Down the street one minute then the next I was in some place dark, with this horrible pain going through me, like I was burning from the inside. I screamed for help but no one ever came. When the pain finally stopped, it was such a relief that it took me a second to recognize all the changes in me. My senses were stronger, the thirst, and the biggest shock was that my heart no longer beat in my chest." I trailed off , remembering that time clearly. How afraid I was, the lost I felt when I finally realized what I had become. I felt Ruby's lips on my cheek.
"I'm sorry that you had to go through that ,especially alone." She said sounding sad.
"Doesn't matter anymore. It doesn't change what happened, but I don't feel so alone anymore." I said looking over at her.
"Is that because of me?" She asked with a knowing smile.
"You tell me." I say raising my eyebrow and she smiled one of the brightest smiles I've ever seen. One of pure joy and happiness.
"Does hearing that make you happy?" I asked and she nodded.
"When I'm like you, I can protect you too, and you'll never have to worry about being alone ever."
"That would be nice." I said thoughtfully before sighing. "I just don't know if I can stand to watch you wither and scream in pain or... if I'm strong enough to change you anyway."
"What do you mean? Don't you just bite?" She asked and I shook my head.
"No it's much more complicated. When we feed it's like a frenzy ,it's something like a shark attack. It's almost impossible to stop." I say remembering the first time I tasted blood. The guy didn't stand a chance. Ruby was quiet and I looked over to see her watching me.
"Scared yet?" I asked her, hoping that it was partially true.
"No." She answered quickly and I raised my eyebrow skeptical.
"Well yeah but not enough to make me change my mind. I still want this, and I trust you. You're stronger than you think you are." She said in an almost knowing voice. Her faith in me is astounding I'll give her that.
"Can I ask you something?" I say and she nodded. "Are you rushing into this because you think I'll leave you?" I asked and she shook her head, to quickly this time to be believable.
"Don't lie. The truth please." I said and she looked down and I saw a small sigh come from her.
