Chapter 27

When I walked back into the apartment, the lively atmosphere was gone. It had been replaced with anger and hurt.

Zhan's parents didn't even look at me or acknowledge me. I could hear sobs coming from Zhan's room and immediately knew that something seriously wrong happened.

I couldn't prevent myself from walking straight to his room. When I opened the door, the image I saw broke my heart.

Not only was Zhan crying, but he was packing well. This meant that the conversation didn't go well at all.

I searched his face for an answer, and he just shook his head, no. One answer to 2 questions. One, they said no, and two, I shouldn't come in.

With much resolve to speak to them myself, I closed the door and walked towards the lounge.

I was going to talk to them myself. I am sure Zhan tried and failed, but I won't forgive myself if I don't at least try.

I got there, still feeling ignored but determined, and sat down across them.

"Mr and Mrs Xiao, judging from how Zhan looks, he told you about the nature of our relationship, and it's safe to assume from everyone's mood you don't approve. May I hear your reasons why?"

"......."

They weren't even looking at me, so I was not sure how this conversation was going to continue. I need to say everything I came to say.

"I am going to guess who I am played a huge role in your decision to reject our relationship. I also know about how Zhan's previous relationship ended and what it cost him. I also know the rumors flying around at your workplace about my family. Let me ask you this since Zhan always says you don't assume things about people. He says he is yet to meet a person that you don't like without reason. Do you really believe you know me and my family that well? I mean well enough to not even give me an ounce of a chance to prove myself?"

"......."

"I guess you have no reason to feel like you owe me any explanation. You just know that I am bad news, and I am someone your son needs to be protected from. I want to plead to you to change your mind so bad but I know that won't work because I am sure that's what Zhan did and it didn't work hence the shape he is in right now. Let me try to explain away some of the things you might be concerned about with regards to my family, to help you know us a little better."

I literally told them the good, the bad, and the ugly about my family.

"My family is not perfect just like any other. The difference is that we have more people looking and counting our flaws against us. We have more people wishing for our downfall than most families. My parents didn't come from wealthy backgrounds they just studied hard and worked hard for every single thing they have, and to assume that their wealth makes them unfeeling is truly distorted. Yes, they made mistakes in trying to protect their children. Wouldn't you have been tempted to do the same. You feel like because my parents are rich, I can't love Zhan. This clearly tells me you don't know me at all. Sorry to sound disrespectful for saying this, but aren't you also saying that Zhan can only be truly loved by people matching his background? I want you to understand something, I love Zhan more than you can imagine, and because of that, even if you leave with him today, I won't give up pursuing him. I am committed to making him mine no matter what it takes. So I am telling you in advance that I will do everything in my power to prove to you how much I love him."

They didn't respond to me at all, but Mrs Xiao at least turned to look at me. She heard me and received my words.  She even got emotional but  couldn't say anything.

Zhan finally came out of his room all packed and ready. His eyes were swollen and red. He was still crying, battling to compose himself. It broke my heart seeing him like that. I walked to him and hugged him, I made sure that through that hug, I assured him that I won't give up on us.
