novah was on the phone with her brother, the boy being away training for his next race this was the first time they had spoken in a couple of weeks
"you need to come to the next race you havent been to any in a long time" he said
"i've just been busy jay" she was looking through cats on her computer "maybe when i have more time"
"you're always busy now" the sounds of mechanics could be heard in the background
"are you at a track?" the girl asked
"no, at the factory" he replied "i have to go, got a meeting with john in 5"
"alright i'll talk to you later" she said "and i'll try to make it to a race this season promise"
"ok i'll call you and remind you bye" with that he hung up
truth is, novah wasnt all that busy that she couldnt spare a couple of days to go to a race but she didnt feel ready to face her parents yet. last time she had visited it had ended on a fight and then a whole week of crying once she got back to los angeles.
novah's parents had always acted as if they were the perfect parents when truly they were great parents to the two oldest and just good ones to the girl, she thinks they really tried and most of the time she finds ways to forgive them for the lack of attention and affection they gave her throughout the years. when she was two her dad had taken her brothers karting and four year old jay had been fascinated with the cars so after that he had began karting, at eight he had started competing and then at sixteen he had moved to the uk to keep his career going.
for years since the boy's karting career started, weekends had been dedicated to the boy. her father worked out of the city during the weekdays so she only saw him for a couple hours every week, her mom on the other hand had her hands full taking care of all three of the siblings, she didnt have a job but she was always doing house work, making food and taking the kids to and back from school, extracurricular activities too.
novah also spent a lot of time around her mom's side of the family, and although she loved her grandparents her aunts and uncles were a whole different story, even when she didnt do anything they always found a way to make fun of her or blame her for the little things and every time she told her mom about how they made her feel bad she would just be told to stop exaggerating and ignore them.
she scrolled through the page of a shelter looking at the cats, everyday she feels herself closer and closer to just saying fuck it and getting a cat, she looks through some more when she sees the most perfect kitten she's ever seen, it was a brown fluffy kitten with brown eyes and other than a black cat it was all she was looking for so she did what a normal person would do and ran out her door and up the stairs to her best friends apartment
"what" the boy said opening the door
"can you take me to paws and whiskers?" she asked
"to what?" he laughed
"the animal shelter i found a kitten i want to adopt" that was all she had to say and the boy was getting his shoes and keys

"welcome to paws and whiskers how can we help you today?" the nice lady at the front desk greeted
"hi i saw a kitten on your page and im interesting in adopting it" novah said "if its still available"
"alright would you like to come see the cats we have?" the lady asked
"yes that would be great"
"which cat did you see on the page?"
"it was a brown kitten with brown eyes" novah explained as they walked
"oh i think we should still have him, he is the sweetest little guy the only brown one in his litter" the woman explained
"thats great i've been thinking about adopting for a while but i saw him and immediately thought i had to come see him" nova said excitedly
"well here are our kittens and i believe the little guy you were looking for should be just about..." they were walking through a hallway with little rooms with kittens in them "oh right here"
"alex i think im going to start crying" novah grabbed onto his arm
the boy laughed and the woman stepped into the room bringing the little cat back on her arms passing it over to novah
"he is around 12 weeks so he's ready to be adopted" the kitten snuggled into novah's arms as soon as it was placed there
"okay what do i need to sign?" she was tearing up, quackity filming her while laughing silently "because i cant leave without him"
"i'll have one of my coworkers bring over the paperwork so we can start with that as well as the interview and if it all goes well you might just be able to take him today" the woman smiled
an hour and a half later the pair was parking in front of pet smart with the kitten in a little box, the whole thing being filmed for a vlog for novah's youtube channel.
once inside the boy had to stop novah from buying the whole cat department of the store before they got out with a cat tree, a carrier, food and tons of toys as well as other things the girl thought she might need.
once back at the apartments she said goodbye to the boy and walked inside letting her new kitten roam around and get acclimated to his new home
