I joined arsenal in 2015, at the same time as Katie McCabe. She was transferring from Shelbourne and I was moving up from arsenal under 21s even though I was only 18. You would think us joining at the same time would start an unbreakable friendship but instead it sparked an indescribable hatred.
I got called up for the lionesses not long after my arsenal debut and made my England debut in the first match of 2016, scoring two goals. Being a striker and all.
It's now 2023 and me and Katie have never really spoken. This might come as a surprise as we joined at the same time and have been playing on the same team for over 8 years now. I did try to spark conversation with Katie at the beginning, but she would always cut our conversations short or just ignore me all together. So I gave up. She started to avoid me, which wasn't too difficult as we both had different groups of friends, considering she is two years older than me.
My friends throughout my time here has obviously changed as the squad developed. I've recently become very close with Kyra Cooney Cross and Alessia Russo. They are both new signings but the three of us have become very close very quickly despite the age difference. Kyra being 21, Alessia being 24 and me 26. Me and Lessi were already best friends thanks to England camps (along side Tooney and Mary of course) so when I found out she was joining arsenal I was estatic. Me and Kyra just clicked straight away. There is not a bad bone in her body and she gives the best advice, even though she's the youngest out of the three of us.
I'm close with all the arsenal girls but I also have a special bond with Leah, Beth and Viv. Even though they are three of Katie's closest friends at arsenal. When I joined the lionesses, Beth and Leah were really friendly with me and have been like my sisters ever since. And then obviously because I spent time with Beth, me and Viv became closer so she's like a sister too.
When lessi and Kyra transferred to arsenal, the three of us moved into a little house not far down the road from Beth and Viv. We often go round to their house for dinner, as the three of us can't cook for the life of us. Our house is about a 5 minute walk down the road from Beth and Viv, a 10 minute drive from the Emirates and about a 5 minute drive from the block of flats where the rest of the arsenal girls live. Including Katie, so I normally stay away from there when possible.
Something happens at a random England camp and even though the immediate effect wasn't anything major, the long term effect was something I would have never dreamed of.
Me and Katie have simply avoided each other for so long, why have we all of a sudden become enemies?
