"AHH!"

A few thumps were heard on the other side of the phone.

I started hysterically laughing at my friend, Makena.

We were on call and she fell down her stairs, making a really loud noise.

Her stairs were hard wood, which made it 10x funnier.

"That wasn't funny." Her head popped into camera view after she picked up her phone.

That only made me laugh harder.

Somehow, between laughs, I was able to get out, "That was so funny!"

By now I was gasping for air, wheezing as the thought just replayed in my head.

After another minute or two I calmed down a bit.

"I'm glad my mom's not home right now or I'd get in trouble for being too loud." I told Makena, wiping a tear, still slightly giggling.

"Shut up fatty."

"Look at you girl. I have a six pack. You have a really big sweet tooth."

She jokingly gasped, making me laugh.

"Wait, where is your mom anyway?" She asked.

"With her teammates for a bonding thing." I replied.

She nodded, understanding.

I was home alone. Because her national team camp was here in San Diego, Mom got to stay at home but still go to trainings, bondings, and meetings. It was nice to not have to sleep in a hotel bed.

She was currently at the hotel for a last minute bonding.

Just then, I made out Makena's name getting called.

She sighed. "Sorry Luc, I gotta go for dinner."

"No worries. See ya tomorrow."

"Byee." She dragged out the e, ending the call.

It was a little late for dinner, but knowing Makena and her family, I knew they could be a little different at times.

I flopped into my bed, scrolling on my phone as I waited for Mom to come back so we could watch this movie she really wanted to see.

Then all of a sudden, I heard a loud crash come from downstairs.

Immediately my heart stopped.

I was frozen in place, not knowing what to do.

No way this is really happening.

I thought maybe I was just overthinking it, I quickly checked the security camera replay on the home app.

Sure enough, there was a person, dressed in all black, grabbing a brick from my neighbor's yard and smashing our window with it.

My blood went cold, as tears silently flowed down my eyes.

I quickly grabbed a knife I used to eat my dinner with before turning off the lights, locking the door, and hiding in my closet.

I can't believe this.

I rapidly whipped out my phone, texting my mom.
