"You know, at school people talk about you guys all the time," Connie whispers to her Steven.

He glances up at her. "What do they say?"

"Good stuff mostly. But there's always ignorant ones." She likes when he rests his head on her lap and wondered what school was like.

"Is everyone a bunch of jerks?"

She giggled quietly and shook her head slowly. It turned into a confirmatory nod that grew in character. "Yeah, kinda. But there's ones who aren't as bad."

"Do the teachers really all hate their jobs?" His voice cracks and he wants to evaporate on the spot, but his best friend only trails her fingers over his throat, no teasing.

"I don't think they hate teaching, I think I just am in a really difficult age group to handle."

He liked when she talked about school. He daydreamed about it and watched shows about it but this was far better. "Are we all that different?"

She smiled. "You and I?"

"No," Eyes trace to the side then up at her again. "Yes."

"No, Steven. You'd fit in fast."
