Freshman Year, Winter Dance

"So..." Connie tried to jumpstart the conversation and Steven brightened.

"So..." He trailed off all the same. "Nice weather in here?"

She giggled and shook her head. "It's a central system, Steven. No weather. Try again."

"I can't believe you asked me to the dance." He paused and explored a twirl with her. "I thought you hated them."

She let her hands rest on his shoulders again. "I do. But... together wasn't so bad. Plus, rites of passage and whatnot."

"Well, your suit is really pretty." He nodded down to her velvet blue tux. "Blue is cool."

"The same to you, kind sir." She backed away and curtsied.

He bowed and with a flourish of his hand they began ballroom dancing to an overplayed pop song as they joked and laughed.

The dance was okay, the company was better.
