CHAPTER FOURTY FOUR - Dirty Secrets Part One

Shane's PoV

All of it felt wrong.

It's peaceful. Way too peaceful. An ominous sign that something bad is about to commence.

Maybe it's just my pregnancy hormones driving my anxiety. Or maybe I'm just overthinking this too much. Something's off, I can feel it.

I kept looking at my phone for Kieran's reply. He hasn't replied. The last message I received from him was—

I'll be home soon.
I love you.

It's 5 o'clock in the afternoon. He should be coming home soon. He should be.

Everything felt perfect up until now.

Justice has been served. My mother is free. My kids are safe. My baby is coming. Everything is going well.

Then why do I keep looking at my phone?

SEVEN MONTHS EARLIER....

"Good morning, love."

Kieran's kisses on my shoulder woke me up. I felt him planting some more kisses on my growing baby bump.

"Hey, buddy. Did you sleep well in your mommy's belly? I know you did." He whispered.

This has been one of my favorite moments to wake up to in the morning. My husband took it upon himself to routinely talk to our unborn baby whenever he wakes up. He told me about this scientific study that babies could easily recognize their parents' voice by talking to them while they were inside the womb.

"You're halfway through the second trimester, buddy. Makikita na namin sa wakas itsura mo soon. Sana kamukha mo mommy mo. Haha." I felt his palm draw circles down my belly button. "You'll see why. Have I ever told you your mommy's so beautiful?"

"Gwapo ka naman ah? Why can't our baby take after your facial features?" I protested, my fingers found solace on combing his dark, disheveled hair.

Kieran met my gaze with a boyish smirk, "Mas cute kapag lalaking version mo anak natin. Makukuha niya pagiging intimidating mo."

"And he'll have your kindness." I said, laughing. "Have you thought about Dylan's name suggestion? I like it."

We haven't confirmed our baby's biological gender yet, but we were already deciding on the names. Dylan suggested names for her sibling.

"Keenan and Annika." Kieran chuckled, burying his face on my waist. "To think that our daughter could come up with names better than us combined."

"I know right? We should have talked to her sooner about our dilemma." Dylan is our savior. We didn't know what to name our baby until she butted in our conversation. "Keenan Ramos. Annika Ramos. I can already imagine their names being famous."

"Pagisipan na rin ba natin yung second names nila?" Kieran asked, still leaning his head against my belly to hear our baby's heartbeat.

"Isn't it too soon to decide on a second name? We don't know our baby's gender yet."

"I know, I know. Nae-excite lang talaga ako. I mean, look at us, baby. We're having a baby. Hindi pa rin ako makapaniwala." Sinundot niya bump ko para siguraduhing totoo nga 'yon. "We're having a baby." He repeated, exhaling the words out.

Umayos ako ng upo't sumandal sa headboard. Bumangon na rin si Kieran para akbayan ako. His palm never left my belly.

"I booked an ultrasound appointment with my colleague for tomorrow. May kailangan ka bang gawin bukas?" Kieran asked, pertaining to my preparation for the upcoming trial. "I can rebook, of course."
