The Crossing
Season 7 x 15

"long night ahead of us" i sighed, scribbling in a chart.
"you're not supposed to say that" abby smiled.
"why, am i gonna jinx it?" i teased
"gianna doesn't believe in jinx's" malik smiled
"exactly"
"maybe what happens tonight is always supposed to happen?"
"that's pretty unfair, don't you think?"
"you don't believe in fate?"
"i don't necessarily believe that a child is meant to get run over" she shrugged
"now you're jinxing something"
"well, turn on the tv because there's a major trauma near the lakeshore" carter pointed
"way to go, gianna" abby smirked
"hey mark, you heading up for your testing" i asked, he was signing off his charts.
"unfortunately"
weaver was sending him to do cognitive testing. it was b.s if you ask me.
"i wish you all the best" i smiled
"the nurses think weaver is crazy" i whispered
"thank you, gianna" he grinned
"i'll get he trauma rooms ready" chuny said
"right behind you" i shouted, following her down the hallway.

and just like that, the department was crazy. i irrigated 3 lacs and dealt with one trauma.
"gianna i need 10 of morphine" someone shouted.
"hold on" i said, pointing my finger out.
i answered the incoming paramedic call.
"hello?"
"hello?" the voice repeated
"carter is that you?"
he sighed in relief.
"gianna, i need you to get benton on the phone"
"we're really swamped, how bad is it?"
"i'm performing a double amputation"
i raised my eyebrows.
"what?"
"i'll be right back"
"stay on the line"
i ran down the hallway, passing chuny the morphine.
"dr. benton"
"i'm a little busy right now, gianna"
"carter is performing a double amputation"
"alone"
his eyes went wide, and he was running toward the admit desk.
——
"bp is down" i shouted
"we need a thoracotomy"
"10 blade"
i handed the scalpel over.
"okay, rib spreader"
"gianna, get the paddles ready"
i pressed a button, charging them up.
"they're charging"
ready.
"okay, charged"
"clear"
"nothing"
this man was dead.

after irrigating, bandaging, setting up ivs and taking patients upstairs, everything had cooled down.
it was almost midnight and my shift was over. i'd been on my feet for almost 24 hours, and it sure felt like it.
i'd much rather be here though, than under that train.
i buttoned up my coat, making my way outside. it was snowing.
as i turned the corner, carter was walking next to me.
"i heard about that amputation you did" i smiled
he nodded his head.
"romano didn't think it went well"
i shrugged
"it's romano"
carter was silent.
"you did a good job"
"yeah, i guess" he sighed
"if the patient isn't dead, i'd call that a win"
"and you're not even a surgeon"
"you did a blind amputation"
"somethings got to count for that"
"i guess you're right, gianna" he smiled

a/n: this isn't as detailed as i wanted this part to be. this particular episode of ER is definitely a good one. i apologize for its shortness. i started writing this fic, and got the idea when i was partially through the seventh season, so i've have to do a lot of back tracking. not to mention, i'm no longer available to watch ER on any streaming platform in my region. it kinda sucks. so, i've been backtracking a little bit. and that is why some parts are vague. i've been going off of notes and written summaries of the episodes. regardless, i hope you enjoyed. see you on saturday.
xx.
