46. First Snowfall

First Snowfall
Season 9 x 08
Late November/early December, 2002:

i woke up not in my own bed, except in lukas. he laid next to me with his eyes wide open, looking at me.
"did i wake you?" he whispered
"no" i groaned, rubbing my eyes.
"you looked so peaceful"
his voice was all groggily.
i only had on my bra and underwear, and when he sat up the sheets shifted off me.
"i'm gonna go take a shower but i can take you back to your place before you go to work"
"okay" i nodded, sitting up.
i tilted my head and looked at him as he got up.
"what?" he smiled
"nothing"
i got up out of the bed and gathered the rest of my clothes off the floor.
then, his head creeped through the door, so i looked up.
"red looks good on you" he whispered before i threw my pants at his face.

we got out of the lukas apartment and looked outside. at least three feet of snow piled the streets.
"i don't know if we're gonna be able to get to your apartment"
i could hardly even see lukas car parked out front.
"good thing i wore layers yesterday" i shrugged
i had on yesterdays grey henley top with a black lace tank top on underneath.
unfortunately, i had only running shoes on, though.
"i have skis" luka smiled
"only one pair though, huh?"
he nodded
"guess we'll just try and walk through this" i shrugged.

luka and i were nearly half way to the hospital. except, we had to climb over a huge snow pile now.
i was practically panting like a dog.
"forget it, i'm calling in sick" i groaned
"we're almost there" luka smiled
he stuck out his hands and helped lift me over the bank of snow. after all, luka had the advantage of being over a foot taller than me. he could actually see over this snow.
i stepped down from the bank, following him some more.
when i saw the hospital, my scrub pants were soaked.
"wasnt so bad, huh?"
i frowned
"i'm all soaked"
"well, at least we're here"
"i think it would've been better for me to call in"
finally, we entered the ambulance bay.
"didn't think anyone would actually come in today" carter smiled. he was waiting out front.
"yeah, well, we're here" luka shrugged
a surprise look appeared on carters face when he saw me behind luka.
"thought you were off" luka added.
"i've been trying" carter sighed
"gotta catch a plane to omaha"
"what's there?" i asked
carter looked down at me
"abby's brother is awol and missing"
i nodded
"well, you can go if you want"
"i can cover" luka offered
"not so fast, we got three traumas pulling in" susan smiled
luka and susan went inside.
i headed for the door until carter opened his mouth to say something. nothing came out, though.

i was in the middle of a trauma with luka.
a family was outside making a snowman while a drunk man ran them all over. luka and i were working on he one boy.
"i need a rib spreader" luka sighed
i handed the tool to him along with a ten blade.
i turned around and wheeled the internal paddles over.
"charging to 200"
"okay, charged"
luka took the paddles
"clear"
i pushed another round of lidocaine.
"charged to 300"
"clear"
elizabeth came in.
"how long?"
"20 minutes?"
"try for a little while more before i get consent for a transplant"
luka nodded.
this boy was clearly dead though..

it was later and one of the boys went up for a transplant. the mother and the other boy died, though. it was sad. really sad.
it wasn't so busy now, either. i was thankful since we were down both abby and carter.
i was in the trauma rooms cleaning up with chuny, and i bent down to pick up a glove.
"you wore that too yesterday gianna" she smirked
i threw the glove in the trash.
i took off the henley shirt and put it in my locker and put on an open sweater under my scrub top. of course she had to notice yesterdays tank top underneath it.
"no i didn't" i smiled
"yes, you did"
"i have dozens of black tank tops" i shrugged
"who were you with last night?"
i scowled at her
"you know, you've been pretty close with luka lately" she whispered
i rolled my eyes
"gianna"
"shush" i hushed
"i knew it" she giggled
"if you tell anyone your on friday and saturday nights forever"
she shook her head.
"your secret is safe with me"
"the snow was too high to go back to my apartment"
"i have extra clothes in my locker for next time" she laughed
"thanks" i said, shaking my head.

after irrigating a few cuts, bandaging a shovelling accident and getting x-rays for two ice slips, i was pretty much done.
only two more hours to go, too.
luka was finishing charts in an empty, dark exam room.
i sat on the empty gurney beside him.
"are you as tired as i am?" luka smiled
"might jump off the building while i still have the chance"
"don't say that" he whispered
i was silent and he continued scribbling into his notes.
"i feel like we don't know each other that well"
"hm?"
"i know you"
"but i want to know you better" i added
he tilted his head and smiled
"we've both gone out with other people and whatever"
"but i want you to know that i really like you, luka"
he put his pen down and looked at me.
"you don't have to feel the same-"
"of course i feel the same way"
i smiled at him.
"i like you, gianna"
"and i want to get to know you better, too"
