Chaos Theory
Season 9 x 01
Late May/ early June 2002:

"i'm sorry, gianna" susan said
"i can't even talk about it right now" i scoffed
"vaccinations are ready, nurse"
i rolled my eyes
"i'll do you first, then you can start administering the rest of the er"
i nodded my head.
the lady from the cdc gave me the vaccine. 15 small needle pokes in my arm. she covered the area with a bandage.
"alright, go on"
i took the tray.
"susan, you're up" i said, putting a pair of gloves on.

after giving vaccines to susan, luka, jerry, malik, pratt, chen, gallant and stan. we were told to evacuate the whole hospital.
i was silent, i didn't know what to think. i just wanted to get out of this place and have a shot of tequila.
abby and carter still needed a vaccination though..
i let out a sigh
"gallant, can you give them their vaccinations?"
"sure" he nodded
"i don't think i ca-"
"i heard" he frowned
"thank you" i nodded, walking off toward the admit desk.
——
most of the patients in the hospital were transferred. just two more left to go.
"susan asked me to come see how he was doing" i said going into an exam room.
"we're waiting on transport" luka said
"the chopper is on the way" i nodded
"nobody told me there was a chopper coming for him"
"come on" i motioned, holding the door open.
"i'm afraid of helicopters" the patient shouted
"well, you don't have a choice" luka laughed
susan, luka and i all headed up to the rooftop.
when we got up there romano and susan were fighting for who got to go on the helicopter.
i let out a sigh, ruining my hand through my hair.
i looked down at our patient and when i looked back up, romanos scrubs got caught in the propellor of the helicopter, chopping his arm right off.
"jesus christ" i wowed, my eyes wide.
luka and susan ran over to him.
"look for the arm, gianna" susan shouted
i went around the aircraft. the arm wasn't anywhere to be seen.
then there it was.
i picked it up and ran it over to a gurney putting it in a plastic bag.
"he's bleeding out" one of the icu nurses said
"bag him"
"you guys will have to go ground transport, there's no way this chopper is flying for awhile" the pilot said, looking at the propeller.
"we can't" luka shouted
"you have to!"
romano and our car crash patient went in the elevator first
"gianna, stay with me" susan begged
i waited for the next elevator.
susan ran her hand through her hair
"jesus christ"
"i know" i said, still stunned
"please, you guys need to call my son" our patient said
"we can after we get you out of here"
suddenly, the alarms went off and his vitals were unstable.
"oh my god" i groaned
susan dug through the medic kit, nothing.
"gianna, i'm gonna go find an iv"
"i'll be back" she said
"i'll start compressions" i nodded, shouting
for the five minutes i was alone, i just pounded on that mans chest like my life depended on it. it didn't help, though.
i looked under the gurney and saw the defibrillator. i knew i wasn't supposed to do it, but i had to. i squeezed some gel on the machine and charged it.
beep
nothing.
susan came back with the iv though.
"still nothing?"
"no" i panted
i pushed the elevator button. and we went in the car.
susan dialled the emergency line.
i still did compressions.
"there's nobody in this hospital"
"gallants on his way"
i stopped compressions, taking a breath.

before gallant could get to us, our patient died.
i was sitting on a bench in the ambulance bay. susan and everyone had already left to go home. romano was being operated on my anspaugh.
i just needed some time to process what happened today.
the hospital being locked down because of smallpox, romano getting his arm cut off, carter kissing abby.
abby and carter weren't going to end at just a kiss, either.
i knew it, i have for awhile.
"you alright?"
a body sat down next to me.
it was luka.
i looked up at him, then back down at my lap.
"just thinking" i smiled
the night-time breeze made goosebumps on my skin.
"crazy day, huh?"
"yeah" i sighed
"at least we're not in there"
"i'm glad" he smiled
"although i don't think it would be that different" i added
he tilted his head
"it feels like i spend most of my life in there, anyways"
"i guess you're right" he chuckled
"i'm sorry about carter and abby" he said after a moment of silence.
i shrugged
"it was gonna happen at some point"
i looked at my lap and another tear fell from my face.
"it was a long time coming"
"still hurts" i whispered
"it's been a crazy couple of months, huh?"
i looked back up at him.
"its crazy how life can just turn on you like that" i smiled
he took his thumb and wiped a tear from my cheek.
"i know"
i tilted my head and looked at him. the bags under his eyes were darker now, the first few buttons of his shirt were undone and there were splotches of blood on his pants.
next thing i know, we were the ones kissing.
i kissed back too, for awhile.
after my lips left his, i moved closer to him. he wrapped his arms around my torso and i nuzzled my face into his neck.
"let me drive you home" he whispered
i nodded, standing up off the bench.
i looked back at the hospital. it was dark except for the ER.
it felt weird.
this whole month has.
as i stepped further away from the building, a wave of peace flew over me, though.

a/n: heheheheh. i'm back from my vacation. NYC was insane, it all still feels like a fever dream. hmm,  fever dream.. that also sounds like this part. it's getting crazy, i told you. good things are coming!! i hope you enjoyed ;)
