Next of Kin
Season 9 x 09
December, 2oo2:

12 hours down, 3 to go.
i bent down in the trauma room and cleaned up from the car crash that came in not to long ago.
"missed me?" a voice said behind me.
a smile stretched on my face as i stood up and turned around.
i took a step toward luka and wrapped him in a hug, kissing his lips.
"i guess that's a yes"
"i wanna go home" i frowned
he ran a hand through my hair.
"it's been a long shift, huh?"
"yeah" i sighed.
"you're off at seven?"
i nodded my head
"we can go home together if you want"
"sure" i smiled
"want to jump on a case with me?"
"depends" i smiled
"man with a cough"
"sounds easy" i nodded
——
"dr. kovac, the films came back on mr. issapon" i said, handing him the envelope
"good, any word on the labs?"
i looked at the clock.
"should be ready"
"i'll head up when i get the chance" i nodded
"don't worry about it" he nodded
"can you irrigate my lac and fetch me some lidocaine?" erin hawkins asked as i walked down the hallway.
she'd been getting on all the staffs nerves today. and for some reason, i could get a chance away from her. she was the needy type of med student. the know it all, yet the girl who was always nervous of doing something wrong or making a mistake. this was the fourth patient i had to help her with today, too.
"of course" i smiled, heading to the drug lockup. there was just something about her...
a certain group of med students i had seen had the same way about her too. she was just annoying. in a helpless sort of way. like a fly that keeps buzzing around your head but you just can't get away from it. she needed second opinions on everything.
maybe i was just tired.
i went over to the curtain with her saline and lidocaine.
putting on a fresh pair of gloves, i irrigated the lac.
it wasn't that deep of a cut.
"how did you get this?" i asked the patient. he was a male, about early twenties.
"i was on my ladder putting up my christmas lights for my wife"
"i fell off" he said, embarrassed.
"christmas is in like a week and a half" i laughed
"i was busy" he shrugged
when i flushed the wound out a little more, he winced.
"sorry"
"alright hawkins, have at it" i smiled, throwing out the used gauze.
"thanks, gianna"
i nodded.
"i'll check back in a minute"
"sure thing" she smiled.
——
a half hour left of my shift. i took a deep breath.
i was sitting in the waiting area signing all the time cards when hawkins sat next to me and scribbled into her charts.
she looked into the window of the er.
"you know gianna, i just can't do anything right around these doctors today"
"pratt just yelled at me" she groaned in a offended voice.
i rolled my eyes.
"but dr. kovac" she smiled
"he's got a way about him, don't you think?"
i was silent.
she turned to look at me.
"he's single, right?"
i just about wanted to die right there.
instead, i took a deep breath.
"your a med student hawkins"
"so that's a no?"
"i heard he's involved with someone" i shrugged, scribbling into my notes.
"who?"
i waved my pen in the air "a nurse, blonde hair, brown eyes"
"abby is with dr. carter"
"you mean lindsay, that night shift nurse?"
"no, hawkins-"
her eyes went wide "oh my god"
"i had no-"
"it's fine" i smiled, putting down my pen.
"i've got to go home" i sighed
"well, good night" she smiled, standing up after i did.
"i'll see you around" i waved
i walked out of the waiting room and around to the admit desk.
"god get me out of this place" i groaned, leaning on the counter next to chen and susan.
"tell me about it" chen sighed
"i need a big margarita to wash the day away" susan smiled
"want to join me ladies?"
"i need to sleep" chen said, yawning.
"you two have a good night, though" she waved
"goodnight"
"let me guess, you have plans" susan winked
chen walked away.
"maybe" i smirked
"see where the night takes me" i shrugged.
"tequila sounds like it will take this headache away"
"tell me about it" she cackled.
——
i was riding passenger as luka drove down the street.
"i got tipped ten thousand dollars today"
my eyes went wide "you what?"
"i didn't want to accept it but when i was going to give it back, the woman died"
"jesus christ" i sighed
"you don't think it's bad of me to cash it in, do you?"
"all i'm thinking is of applying to med school"
he smiled at me.
"maybe it was meant to be" i shrugged
"i don't know" he smiled
"you know erin hawkins?"
"the med student?"
i nodded my head
"she's got the hots for you" i smiled
"what?"
"she wouldn't leave me alone today and she was asking about you and if you were in a relationship"
he nodded his head "really?"
"i told her we were involved with each other"
a smirk plastered on his face.
"you're not mad?" i laughed
"no" he shrugged
"why would i be?"
"i don't know" i smiled
"she's annoying, don't you think?" he whispered
"yeah" i nodded
we stopped at a red light and i leaned over to him, pressing my lips on his cheek.
he turned his head, and kissed me back on the lips.
