Bone Dry Eyes

Stinging eyes and an aching heart
There may as well be blood
To streak down my cheeks
With how it refuses to roll free

The comfort and silence of peace
Is not enough to let it go

I can feel it well in my chest
The emotion longs to pour free
Yet the dam remains whole

I still feel like a scared child
Where the tears mean punishment
And safety meant suppression

The stranglehold keeps me gasping
And I long to breathe again

Help me to cut the cord
And set my heart free
From all of the pain
That won't let me be

Show me a loving hand
To catch the tears from my eyes
And let them flow again
To be free and unafraid
Of learning to let go of the weight
That pulls me back down
