Crashes were never the way to start a weekend. Arvid knew it was an off weekend as soon as he got in the car and the balance was off. Then he lost control and binned it straight into a wall.
Definitely not the way to start a weekend. Especially the last weekend of the season.
He got a lift back to the Prema garage, but on his way over, he wasn't even sure he would be able to race the rest of the weekend. Based on the looks of his car, he was not so sure his team could get it fixed by the time qualifying happened later that day. He felt like shit for forcing this on his team, but to be honest, he also felt like shit.
He walked deep into the back of the garage and collapsed on the massage bed, ready to call it a day, but his body stopped abruptly on top of something–someone. You.
"Arvid," You groaned. Some wake-up call that was. He made no effort to move as he just wrapped his arms around your body and hid his face in the space between your neck and shoulder. You moved your hands from your side up to the nape of his neck as you ran your fingers through his hair gently. "Arvid, what happened?"
"Crash," was all he muttered as he tried to push himself further into you. "I don't wanna talk about it."
"Okay," You comforted as you continued to brush through his hair while one hand ran along the span of his back and shoulders. "Can I ask if you're okay? Does anything hurt?"
"Just my ego I think," Arvid tried to joke, but it fell flat when you didn't react to it. "My head's a little heavy, but that's it, I guess."
"Did you get cleared by medical?" You whispered, fearing he might have a concussion. You tried to get a hand between his face and your shoulder but he just buried himself further. "Arvid, what if there's a bruise of your have a concussion?"
"I don't, I know," He sighed as he turned his face a little to face him. He still rested against your shoulder with his eyes closed, but now, you could see his face at least. He was right. No bruises, no rashes, no gashes. "If I had a concussion, the ride over to the garage and the sounds of the fans would make it unbearable. My head's just heavy. I don't know how else to describe it."
"Is it fuzzy or laggy?" You asked, craning your head to try and analyze his expressions. He looked more content laying on your shoulder than he did that morning in your hotel room. Maybe he was truly just feeling the gravity of the situation. "If I press on it, does it hurt?"
"No, my mind was running a million miles a minute on the way over, but now, it's just stopped. As for hurting, no, but can you keep running your hands in my hair? It's comforting."
"Always, baby," You pouted as you continued scratching his scalp. "What was going through your mind earlier? Maybe getting it off your chest will help."
"I just feel bad," He sighed a little. "The team works so hard for us leading into every weekend, and not even 10 minutes into the session, I crash. And it's a big crash! I don't know if they're gonna be able to fix it for qualifying. This was not how I imagined going into the last race this season."
"You severely underestimate your team," You scoffed lightly, moving one of your hands to his chin to force him to look at you. This is the first time you have seen his eyes since the crash, and they were a little bloodshot and teary. Makes sense, but you wanted to help him in any way you could to get him back in the racing mindset. "Your team is made up of miracle workers. Don't doubt their abilities."
"That doesn't stop me from feeling bad," Arvid chuckled lightly.
"Never said it was gonna stop you from feeling bad, but you need to know they are trained for times like this," You explained, brushing a finger over his cheeks to clear them of any tears that escaped his eyes. "The team is here for you, and this is what they do best. I wouldn't be surprised if they tell you within the next couple of hours that your car is fixed."
"What would I do without you?" Arvid asked sarcastically as a smile finally appeared on his face. He leaned over to give you a quick kiss. He pulled back just enough so you could feel his breath fan over your lips as he whispered, "You always know what to say."
"You'd always be a Debbie Downer," You chuckled, leaving one last kiss on his nose before laying your head back completely. "I know you need your obligatory cuddles, so soak them all in before the team snatches you away. Get some rest before qualifying, cuddle bug. I'm not going anywhere."
