"Toto wants to see you," Yu told Kimi, looking up from your phone as Kimi came back over to you. It was still summer break, and while Kimi had a proper break from racing, you did not. Pictures still needed to be taken, edited, and posted. You guys went to California for the break, and you were at the beach for the day that Toto decided he needed to talk ASAP. "Something about a free practice session soon."
"He knows I'm not ready," Kimi muttered as he shook his head, flinging water from his hair at you. "I've told him that I want to focus on F2."
"I can tell him that, but if you are signing with them next season, maybe it's a good idea to run in the current car," You offered. You understood both sides. Kimi not having the confidence to run in the car, and Toto wanting to give Kimi the most practice in an F1 car before next season. "Just know it could be beneficial for both sides. You get extra running on the track before qualifying and crucial practice in a car that could be yours next year. Either way, I'll support it."
"Can you get him on the phone?" Kimi asked after a second of contemplating. He sat next to you on the towel you had laid out as you dialed Toto's number. "Do I just say that I don't think I'm ready?"
"Tell him your feelings, and we'll see what happens," You said as you passed the phone over to Kimi.
Needless to say, whatever Toto said reassured Kimi enough to agree to do fee practice in Monza. Next thing you knew, you were standing with Kimi in the Mercedes garage right as he was about to get in the car.
"Give it what you got, but if anything happens, it's fine," You comforted, somewhat knowing the types of thoughts swirling through his head. "You're learning. Remember that."
"I needed that," Kimi chuckled as he pulled you into a hug and rested his head against your shoulder until he was called over to get in the car. It was a couple extra minutes of Kimi talking with Bono and Toto from his spot on your shoulder before they decided it was time to get in the car. You pulled back and gave Kimi a pat on his shoulder before grabbing your camera and getting onto the pit wall.
You had a bad feeling, but you would never voice it. The last thing he needed was to hear that you were nervous. You swallowed your thoughts, pulling out your camera to start taking pictures of Kimi as he left the pit box and started down the pit lane.
You watched in awe as he passed the finish straight at higher speeds than you expected from him, and you looked back at Toto, seeing him smiling widely at Kimi's performance. You looked up at the timing screen and saw him at the top. You excitedly ran back over to Toto to watch the onboard with him, George, and the rest of the team.
You watched on as Kimi went to do another flying lap. He was literally flying on the track, and he was even up on Lewis Hamilton's time. Then, you felt your stomach drop as you tapped Toto's shoulder.
"Tell him to abort it," You whispered, not looking away from the screen.
"He's fine," Toto dismissed easily as he chuckled. "He is a racing driver. He knows what he's doing."
"Toto, I'm telling you," You tried to explain, but he cut you off.
"If I didn't think he could do it, he wouldn't be in George's car right now," Toto argued just as Kimi went into the Ascari chicane. You all watched on, but the feeling never left you. You put on a headset, so you could hear any radio messages from Kimi. That's when you noticed the back tyres of a certain Mercedes spin out and cause the car to go hurling into the barriers. Deep down, you knew it was Kimi.
You turned to glare at Toto for a second as you listened for his response on the radio. Thankfully, he was fine, but you knew this would take a hit to his confidence.
You waited by the garage entrance for him to come in on the scooter. When he got back, you rushed to him and gave him a once over, checking to see if he had any visible injuries. You didn't see anything, so you pulled him into a tight hug as soon as he got off the scooter. He wrapped his arms around your shoulders as he walked you backward towards George and Toto in the back of the garage.
"I'm so sorry, George," Kimi said immediately as they made it out of the media's eyes. "I just lost it before I knew it."
"It's fine, Kimi. It didn't look too bad," George comforted as he headed back to the garage to see the full extent of damage to his car. That's when Kimi turned to Toto.
"I told you I'm not ready," Kimi pressed. He knew this would happen, yet he let Toto sweet-talk him into it under the pretense it would be just like testing. No. It would never be like testing because this was George's car at the end of the day, and Kimi wrecked it. "We can rush this all you want, but I'm not ready for this. The media is gonna have a field day with this now. I should've just stuck with my gut."
"Kimi, you did far more than we expected from you," Toto responded, which confused you, so you pulled your head back a little while keeping your arms around Kimi's torso. "You pushed the car beyond what we thought was the limit, and that is incredibly valuable to us. You may have crashed, but it wasn't that bad. As long as you're okay, we can fix the car."
"What do you mean that I pushed it beyond the limit? Is that fancy for I crashed?" Kimi questioned.
"We saw racing lines we wouldn't have thought about. You found time in the most obscure places. You pulled performance out of the car in every way possible," Toto elaborated as he pointed out specific clips from Kimi's onboard compared to Lewis. "Performances like this are why we think you are ready. You are proving that every time you are behind a wheel."
"Kimi, it may not look like much, but you did amazing out there," You tried to comfort but you knew not much would make him feel better. "Let's turn your focus onto qualifying. What did you learn out there?"
"Don't go on the curbs at Parabolica," Kimi chuckled.
