The soft hum of chatter and laughter filled the cozy warmth of Jimin's family home.
The party was in full swing, filled with close family friends and familiar faces. Laughter bubbled from the kitchen, where his mom and Jungkook's mom were exchanging stories, while kids ran between legs, giggling and shrieking with joy.
But Jungkook, standing by the window with a drink in hand, had eyes for only one person - Jimin - who was bustling around, ensuring every guest felt welcome.
Jungkook felt his chest tighten. The Jimin he saw now wasn't much different from the Jimin he had known in high school - kind, selfless, and patient. Yet, there was something new tonight, something that made Jungkook's pulse race and his palms sweat.
**
His mind wandered to the past, to the days when they had been inseparable as teenagers.
It was during their sophomore year in high school that Jungkook first realized how much Jimin meant to him. They had been sprawled on the floor of Jimin's room, textbooks and snack wrappers scattered between them. Jungkook had been staring at the ceiling, half-listening to Jimin ramble about some new choreography he was obsessed with - the way Jimin's smile lit up his face, the way his laugh filled the room - it made Jungkook's chest ache
From then on, Jungkook started noticing everything. The way Jimin's nose scrunched when he was concentrating, the way he hummed when he was happy, the way he always made sure Jungkook felt included, even in the most crowded rooms.
Life had taken them in different directions - Jungkook chasing his dreams in the city, while Jimin stayed closer to home, pursuing his passion for dance. Despite the distance, their friendship had remained constant
**
Jimin caught Jungkook's gaze from across the room and smiled, the kind of smile that lit up his entire face and made Jungkook's heart skip a beat
"Why are you standing here all alone?" Jimin asked as he approached, his voice soft yet teasing
"I'm not alone anymore, am I?" Jungkook replied, smirking slightly
Jimin laughed, the sound warm and familiar. "Good point. Come on, the countdown's starting soon. You have to be with everyone when the clock strikes twelve."
Jungkook hesitated. "Actually... I wanted to talk to you first."
Jimin's smile faltered, concern flickering in his eyes. "Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, yeah...." Jungkook said quickly, running a hand through his hair. "I just...there's something I need to tell you before this year ends."
Jimin tilted his head, waiting.
Taking a deep breath, Jungkook took a step closer, his voice quieter now. "Jimin, you have always been there for me. You are my best friend, my anchor. But somewhere along the way, it stopped being just friendship for me. I... I think I have been in love with you for a long time..."
For a moment, Jimin just stared at him, his expression unreadable. Jungkook's heart sank
Then, slowly, Jimin's lips curved into the softest, most genuine smile Jungkook had ever seen.
"You idiot.." Jimin said, his voice trembling slightly. "Did you really think I didn't feel the same?"
"What?" Jungkook blinked, his breath catching.
Jimin reached out, taking Jungkook's hand in his. "I have been waiting for you to say something for years. I didn't want to ruin what we had, but... I have been in love with you too, Jungkook. For as long as I can remember."
"When?" Jungkook was in disbelief
"You remember the first time we studied together?...the time you spent the entire session doodling in my notebook?"
Jungkook laughed
"You were so serious about it..." Jungkook said, chuckling. "I thought you were going to throw me out when you caught me drawing that bunny on the corner of your notes..."
"I still have that notebook..." Jimin admitted, biting his lip as he looked down. "I don't know why, but... it always made me smile."
Jungkook's heart skipped a beat. "You kept it?"
"Yeah..." Jimin murmured, his voice barely audible. "I think that's when I first started liking you."
Jungkook stared at him, wide-eyed. "Wait, what?"
Jimin's blush deepened as he fidgeted with the hem of his sweater. "It's stupid, I know. But .... I couldn't stop thinking about you after that day."
Jungkook swallowed hard, his own cheeks heating up. ".. I liked you way before all this but I knew I was a goner for you during that annual dance competition...."
Jimin looked up
"You were so nervous, but you still got up there and danced like it was your last .... I remember thinking... wow, he's amazing."
Jimin blinked at him, stunned. "You thought that?"
"Yeah..." Jungkook admitted, scratching the back of his neck. "I couldn't take my eyes off you."
The world seemed to fall away, leaving just the two of them standing in the glow of the fairy lights. Jungkook's chest swelled with relief and joy as he squeezed Jimin's hand, his grin so wide it hurt
Before either of them could say more, the room erupted into cheers as the countdown began.
"Ten... nine... eight..."
Jimin's cheeks flushed as he looked at Jungkook
"Three... two... one! Happy New Year!"
Without thinking, Jungkook pulled Jimin closer, his hands trembling slightly as they cupped Jimin's face. And then, as fireworks lit up the night sky outside, Jungkook leaned in, his heart pounding as he gently pressed his lips to Jimin's. The kiss was soft and tentative, filled with all the shyness and wonder of two people finally admitting what they had known for years.
When they pulled back, both of them were breathless and blushing, their foreheads resting against each other.
"Happy New Year..." Jimin whispered, his voice trembling but full of warmth.
"Happy New Year..." Jungkook replied, his grin shy but radiant "I love you"
"I love you too"
The end
A/N: happy 2025! This is going to be a great year! Believe it! And thank you so much for always supporting me. I love you all.
