We had stopped for the night after the confrontation with Drosselmeyer, because Mytho looked far too traumatized to continue walking. He hadn't even had the strength to turn me back to my human form. I was lying on the ground trying to make myself comfortable, when I heard a voice.
"Duck?" Adelberto flew down from his perch on the tree. "What did you mean when you said that Drosselmeyer is willing to sacrifice anything for the sake of the story?"
"Adelberto, it's late I--"He stopped me before I even finished my sentence.
"Please Duck."
I sighed, why were the men of this book so good at manipulating me? "I'm not really supposed to be here."
Adelberto looked befuddled, "What do you mean you aren't supposed to be here?"
"I was supposed to have vanished in a ray of light after I confessed my love for the prince."
Adelberto looked horrified. "You were supposed to die?!"
"Fairytales usually don't end happily Adelberto. All happiness comes with someone else's suffering." I stood up and waddled, "And I did. You think it's bad being a raven for a couple of days. I was one for more than 100 years. I got to see everyone live without me. My best friend and the man I loved, got married, my place in the ballet company was filled, and I was slowly forgotten. You think being a raven for a couple of days is bad? I was a duck for 100 years, swimming in that pond, hoping someday it would end." I knew I sounded pathetic but I couldn't help it. Even talking about it made me remember the misery of circling that pond, waiting for something, anything to change.
Adelberto whispered, "Then why did you do it? Help us?"
"I couldn't let anyone else suffer like I did. That's my fate alone."
He put his wing on my back "It shouldn't be Duck."
I looked at him despondent. "It has to be. Every time I even try to be happy, even make a small change to my fate all I end up with is misery. The only way I can prevent it is to do what Drosselmeyer wants and give up."
He looked at Mytho who had already fallen asleep leaning against a tree. "Does Father know?"
I shrugged "Maybe. Maybe not. But it doesn't really matter because it will happen no matter what."
"But--"
"No." I settled down. "You can't fight fate. Goodnight Adelberto." I closed my eyes and started to drift to sleep.
But I swear I heard him say "There's always a way."
