I had less than a week left. It all flew by so fast. I didn’t wanna leave, not now, not ever. I had grown to love each and every person here. They were my family and now they would be gone in a matter of days. I sat on the bus deep in thought. I needed to call my parents to let them know to expect me. Since I didn’t have much longer, I hadn’t been given much to do. I was told just to chill out and do whatever and have fun. Pffffft, like that was going to happen. All the happiness of being here was going to be ripped from me and they wanted me to have fun? I’m not entirely sure how that was going to work. I went to grab my phone to call home when Vic climbed onto the bus. I looked up at him puzzled. He and I had a weird relationship and I could never really place what ever it was we were.
“Skye, can we talk?” he asked sitting down next to me.
“Sure, what is it you need to talk about?”
“You know how you only have a few days left right…?” he started.
“Yea… of course that’s what we have to talk about, huh?”
“No, no. Just hear me out first before you get all sad. We all know you don’t want to go home, and honestly we’ve all grown to love having you around in this short time. What I’m asking is will you stay on the rest of the tour with us?” he asked.
My head immediately shot up to face him, “Are you serious?”
“Of course I would be Skye!”
I couldn’t hold back the happy tears as I flung my arms around him. Oh my god, I didn’t have to leave all this behind just yet. I could get to be better friends with Jaime and Tony and Mike and figure out what the hell Vic and I were and I could have my girl nights with Tori and Leda and I wouldn’t have to leave it all behind. I wouldn’t have to worry about them forgetting about me just yet. At least, not for another month.
“Skye, why are you crying?!” Vic asked, taking my face into his hands.
“I’m just so happy!” I said, wiping my nose on my sleeve. “I didn’t wanna leave. I’ve never been this happy in my entire life and I love being here and I love the environment and I love the mindset and I love you and I love everyone I just don’t ever want this summer to end because I’m afraid that I’ll just go back into my sad mindset again. I don’t want you to forget about me.”
“Now what makes you think I could ever forget such a beautiful girl like you,” he replied, touching his index finger to my nose.
I laughed, me a beautiful girl? Vic Fuentes thinking that? Come on Skye snap out of it. I brushed his hands away from my face and picked my phone up.
“I’m gonna call home though and tell them to expect me. I need to talk to them when we get back to Michigan and tell them the truth. They can’t exactly force me to stay there since I’m 18, but they’re going to expect me to pay them back so this is going to have to turn into a ‘summer job’ of some sort I don’t know. You don’t have to pay me to work in the merch booth, I just need to tell them that you are,” I said to Vic. He nodded, understanding and leaned back as I dialed my parents’ number.
It didn’t take too long for my mother to answer the phone. Her voice was rushed and I assumed it was because she had just gotten in and was trying to cook dinner. No matter how much that woman worked, she always felt obligated to cook for the family regardless how much we told her not to worry about it.
“Yes, hello?” she hurriedly answered the phone.
“Mom! It’s Skye!”
“Oh, Skye dear? Hi! How are you? I’m sorry if I sound tired, I just got in and now I’m cooking dinner for your father and brother and myself.”
Just like I figured. She was so predictable.
“I won’t keep you too long, I just want you to know to expect me home in about 4 days,” I said.
“Oh you’re coming home? I thought Rachel would force you to stay until August!”
“Yea, there’s something about all that we need to talk about, but not right now. When I get there, I’m just actually coming to check in. I’m not staying and you’ll understand why once I explain everything. There’s just so much to it, I can’t over the phone alright?”
I could just imagine her puzzled expression as she told me that she’d love to see me and she’d tell Dad and Collin to expect me as well.
“Thanks mom, I love you. See you soon!” I said, hanging up the phone. I looked over at Vic, “Well that went better than I had planned. I’m glad she answered and not my dad. That probably wouldn’t have ended well.”
I sighed really deeply and leaned against Vic. It was little moments like this that made me wonder what we were I guess. He wrapped his arms around me and I sighed again.
“What’s wrong Skye?” he asked curiously.
“Nothing, I’m just tired.”
“Liar.”
“I’m just worried about going home. I don’t have fifteen hundred dollars to pay them back. I don’t even know how to explain to them about any of this and have them understand it without getting mad. They’ve always been so distant from me and Collin. Dad was always on the road and mom always worked in the office. She’s cut way back from when Collin and I were younger, but I’ll be 19 soon and he just turned 16 not too long ago. We’re all grown up and they missed out on a lot. They have no idea what we went through as kids and I mean it’s not their fault it’s just if they weren’t always gone they would have prevented it…”
Vic furrowed his brow. I don’t think he understood what I was talking about since I hadn’t told him about the sexual abuse as a child. I hadn’t told anyone but Jaime and he promised to not tell anyone. I’d tell him… in time. For now, I just needed to look on the bright side. I was going to be with Pierce the Veil for another month. I wondered what I’d do after that, but I wasn’t going to worry about that just yet.
