In the blink of an eye he was running towards the scent. I called after him as I followed but it was no use. I doubted he was even aware of my presence anymore. Julia was slightly slower on the uptake, taking a couple of seconds to drop the deer and follow.

Ahead of me I heard the sound of metal ripping and then the sudden sound of a female screaming. I reached the scene in time to see him slam the blonde into the side of the car. Her boyfriend shouted but remained cowering inside.

In an instant I tackled him to the ground. He growled angrily at me and I hissed right back. Behind me I heard the male start the car, he would have sped away if it wasn’t for Julia arriving in time to lift the back wheels up so he remained on the spot. The female started crying as she stumbled away towards the trees.

I held David down as Julia forcefully pulled the male out of the car, she looked at me;

“What should we do with them?”

I considered, “get David away from here, I’ll sort it out.”

She agreed so I handed him over to her and left her trying to drag him away.

In seconds I caught the male and looked into his eyes, “you are going to forget that you ever met us, you never saw anyone tonight. You were in the car with your girlfriend when you had an accident, you hit a tree. That’s the only thing you remember… now sleep.” My voice was cold and intense, without a word his eyes rolled back into his head and he slumped to the cold ground.

It only took me seconds to catch up to the female and drag her back to the car. She screamed again when she spotted him lying unresponsive on the floor but I ignored it and quickly repeated the same story to her.

Once they were both unconscious I pushed the car closer to a tree so it appeared they had scraped it with enough force to knock off the door which I arranged in an appropriate position after using it to hit the tree so that it looked like the car actually had crashed into it.

After adding a few more artistic scrapes to the car I arranged both of them inside it and stepped back to survey my work. I was confident it would not be questioned, after all who is going to come up with the real explanation?

I found Julia and David about half a mile away. He was still trying to resist her and go back to the scene. Silently I grabbed his other arm and pulled. When we reached the edge of the woods he started to come back to his senses. I watched a look of horrified disbelief fill his expression.

“Did I really just-?”

“Yes.” He made an odd choking noise, I tried to smile reassuringly, “don’t worry, it’s perfectly normal… and they are both going to be fine, a little shook up maybe but ok. They’re probably awake already; they think they hit a tree.”

Julia laughed, “Pretty small tree.” I sent her a glare and she shut up. He let out a groan and sank to the ground, his face in his hands.

Surprised I let go, “umm… David? Are you ok?”

It took him a minute to answer, “No.”

I sighed, the guilt I’d been attempting to ignore washing through me, “David… I’m so sorry, I never should have-“

His anger cut through my apology, “you never should have what? You never should have turned me? You never should have run after me? You never should have kissed him?”

I ignored Julia’s gasp of surprise and looked away. I felt my own temper rising.

“You know what? I don’t regret kissing him. It might have been one of the best things I’ve done in a while! But maybe I shouldn’t have turned you.”
