17: Cant Help Falling In Love With You

Valerie's P.O.V:

It was the last inning and I could feel the jitters through my fingers. We needed to make it through this otherwise it's all over. The Sandlot, gone. Our team was up to bat and we needed to get through this next inning. The score was 5-5. My stomach was literally in knots.

"This is it guys, one last home run and the sandlot is our forever" Tommy said. We all nodded our heads exasperated from such a thought. "We're gonna use this ball" Tommy said showing the ball is saved from the house we'd gotten our gear from.

"Valerie" Tommy paused and everyone stopped what they were doing to watch what was going to happen next. "Bat for us?" He said. I felt myself grow pale. "Yeah!" Everyone agreed and cheered me on to do it. "T-Tommy I can't" I said worriedly. He put his hands on my shoulder as everyone watched. "Do it for dad" he said. Everyone watched as I made my decision. "I'll do it" The team cheered as I grabbed the suitable bat and made my way towards the batting box. Here goes nothing

E.J threw the first pitch and I swung at mid air. "Strike one" the umpire called out. I felt more nervous than ever, palms sweaty, feet shaking. E.J swung the next pitch which resulted in me swinging at mid air again making me angry. "Strike Two" I felt like giving up. I didn't believe in myself and I was gonna make my team lose. "Come on Valerie!" Timber cheered.

I sighed and looked at my target. "You're outta here princess" E.J said. I felt myself grow more determined. "So is this next pitch" I answered back. "This is for you dad" I whispered to myself. He threw the ball and I hit it as hard as I could. It soared over the field and I stood there watching it streak across the sky in disbelief. "Did I do it?" I said to myself.

"RUN!" I heard the team scream. I turned around, confused. "RUN!" The team motioned me to run. I dropped the bat and took off running. The outfielders were still looking for the ball as I made my way to the first base. "KEEP GOING!" The team coaxed. I sprinted to second base and was alarmed to see that the outfielders had the ball in hand. I took off running from third base dodging all of my enemies. Everything shifted past me in slow motion as I sprinted past third base and was on my way to home plate. I glanced behind me to see E.J with the ball.

I slid making my skin burn and dust fly up. Everything still occurred in slow motion as I watched the dust clear. "SAFE!" The umpire called. "YEAH!" The team cheered. The whole team came sprinting towards me with huge smiles on there faces. Timber ran up to me and spun me around in his arms. "Did we do it? We won?" I asked in disbelief. "Yes! You did it Valerie!" He cheered. I got huge hugs from everyone on the team and Tommy hugged me so tight I think I almost lost my breath.

"This is for you" Benny said and handed us a trophy bigger than all of us. We all cheered happily and shouted holding the trophy in our dust covered hand. "SANDLOT!, SANDLOT, SANDLOT!" We chanted and cheered even louder. That moment I realized I'd done it. I played ball, I won the team their rightful sandlot and made my brother and hopefully my mother and father proud.

We were getting ready for the fireworks that were set to go off at town hall around six. Everyone at the field were gathering their things and getting ready to leave. "Meet me here at 8:00" I heard a voice say. I turned around to see Timber riding off on his bike and leaving the lot. I couldn't help but suppress a smile.

"Hey Tommy, I'm leaving early." I said adjusting my necklace. "I'll see you at town hall later" I said quickly and before he could ask any questions I walked out the door riding my bike to our meeting place. I couldn't help but wonder why he needed to see me....alone. I was certainly late. I looked down at my watch. 8:54. I had to help mom with dinner and pick up the mess I made earlier today when I pushed Tommy. I wasn't even expecting for Timber to be waiting for me.

"I'm sorry I'm late" I said as I pulled up to the lot. "No, it's fine I literally just got here 2 minutes ago" Timber giggled. I giggled and set down my bike. It was getting dark out and we sat under the shack. "So, what're you up to since you wanted us to be alone" I giggled. "Well I wanted to tell you how proud of you I am" Timber said. "Why thank you" I giggled. We'd sat in silence watching the stars in the sky. Then fireworks started going off. "Oh shoot! Tommy is probably freaking out!" I yelled running out of the shack.

"Valerie wait!" Timber called out. "What?" I stopped and turned around. All of a sudden I felt his lips smash onto mine. I felt taken back and kissed back. I felt the night sky behind me burst into a million colors as the booming of the fireworks kept time with my heart beat. I wrapped my arms around his neck and felt him hug my waist. We parted and I looked at him with a shocked smile. My heart burst into tons of colors like the night sky when he smiled back.

"I like you Valerie" he spoke up. "I like you too" I felt myself smile so much my cheeks would've started aching. We giggled a bit before we decided we should get to the party at town hall. Squints ran the comity, and apparently planned this behind our backs in case we one.

"Care to dance?" Timber asked. The dance hall was empty because of the fact that everyone was watching the fireworks. "We may" I giggled. Timber managed to find a record besides Footloose and put on something a little more slow.

Timber guided us around as i laid my head on his shoulder. "For I can't help falling in love with you" Timber sung silently in my ear. I moved along with our slow rocking movements. I wouldn't have been anywhere else rather than here. When he kissed me it felt right, when he holds me I never want to let go. I just can't help falling in love with him.
