"You're awake!"
The English accent startled me.
I almost dropped my phone, from where I'd just answered a text from Mum and checked Facebook.
"Sorry."
Dr. Legend apologised as he walked to the end of my bed.
"That- that's okay."
I locked my phone and set it onto the mattress.
"Hi."
Doctor Legend flashed me a smile.
"Hi."
I felt my cheek's heat, the blood flow rushing there.
The Doctor scanned my patient chart.
"So how are you feeling today?"
Do I tell the truth or the whole truth?
If he know's I've been sick a couple of time's today, will he still let me go home?
They said yesterday I'd have to stay in for at least twenty four hour's.
Today lunch time is twenty four hour's.
I avoided making eye contact.
"Umm...I'm great. Feeling way better."
"The note here say's your vital's were quite good last check, but you've been sick a couple of time's this morning."
Damn it!
I winced and flopped my head back into the fluffy pillow.
Doctor Legend's husky chuckle made me snap my eyes open and lift my head.
He set my chart back onto the small tray table and looked into my eyes.
"Morning sickness is nearly a given in the first trimester, Bailey."
I looked down, embarrassed.
"I... Okay."
Doctor Legend walked around the end of my bed and half sat on the edge of the mattress, turning toward me.
"Don't be ashamed to ask question's and learn information."
"I... I'm not."
I shook my head.
"I can't pretend to completely understand pregnancy, I'm not a woman and I haven't been pregnant or carried my own children. However, I'm a Doctor and I have the scientific knowledge, along with experience in treating women and delivering babies."
Why exactly is he telling me this?
"I can understand that there's a hell of a lot that you're struggling to understand and come to terms with."
"That's an understatement."
I felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders.
"Let me know if there's anything I can help with. But know that while often pregnancy in teen's is hard for you to get used to, they're often in some way's easier than pregnancy in older women."
"Easier...how?"
I asked, confused.
Doctor Legend shrugged.
"Younger bodies often bounce back easier. It's sometimes the mental portion that is more challenging on the younger mum-to-be. Socially they can be frowned upon and talked about. From what I understand, it's often daunting to think of raising that child, keeping it alive, let alone teaching him or her how to be a decent human being."
I felt my throat growing thick and the telltale prickle behind my eyes.
I blinked hard.
"That's exactly what I think."
"And I can promise you that you're not alone."
Doctor Legend assured.
"Most Mum's-to-be have that fear, especially first time Mum-to-be's."
"I guess at least I can talk with my Mum."
I looked down at my hand's.
"She had me when she was my age, plus I have four younger sibling's."
Doctor Legend smiled.
"She sound's like she's an excellent candidate for you to talk with then. Also, program's are run for expectant mother's and most classes are available for the expectant father to attend as well."
"Oh really?"
This was new's to me.
I didn't remember Mum attending any classes.
"They're a great way to help prepare yourselves. But even I as a Doctor have to admit there's nothing but experience that can properly prepare you. Even I can't properly speak on that, because my wife and I are in the process of preparing to try for our first born."
"Oh!"
He doesn't have kid's?
But he's married?
"I'm a Doctor and she's a Nurse see, so our career's and Wedding have taken up a fair amount of our year's so far. But hey, we're both prepared for the scientific and medical aspects of babies."
He smiled.
"You must be excited then. It must be relieving to have it in...the plan."
God know's my little bean wasn't in a plan.
But now I know about him or her, I definitely cannot imagine changing it.
"Yes."
Doctor Legend agreed.
"But with planning comes expectation. Just because we're in the medical profession doesn't necessarily mean we've got it any easier than anybody else. Not everybody fall's pregnant easily or has an easy pregnancy or delivery. Experience has taught me it's all pot luck."
"So I shouldn't whinge I'm sick multiple times every morning?"
Now I felt a little stupid being so frustrated by the fact.
"From what we can observe, you and your baby are healthy. Morning sickness is something that for some reason just happen's. Many women stop it after the first trimester. Let's hope you fit into those statistic's, hey."
He offered a smile.
Uh oh...
"And..:if I don't?"
Doctor Legend winced.
"Then you'll find the pregnancy slug a little more challenging. But let's not worry about that yet. It's early day's, so we'll focus on keeping you and the little one healthy."
I nodded.
"That sound's good. Umm...but I do have a question."
"Hit me."
Doctor Legend urged.
"Is there any chance I'm going home today? I did hear yesterday that I was going to be in for twenty four hour's."
Doctor Legend smiled.
"Nice try."
My heart hammered.
I'm not getting out of here any time soon?
"Your ob's look good so far today. I'll run some more soon. But I have to warn you, I am feeling inclined to keep you in another night. You were sick again this morning which means a loss of fluid and electrolytes."
Awe man!
I almost groaned.
"But we know it's likely sickness could follow you around for another what? Five to six week's yet."
On bloody great!
"So we're not going to keep you in here until you don't be sick again."
Thank god.
I'd go absolutely mental.
"But you were in a pretty bad way when you arrived yesterday and I'm under the understanding that your home is almost three hundred kilometre's from here."
I nodded.
"It is."
"So I'd like to keep an eye on you another day. Keep you on some fluid's and arrange a bit of a strategy plan for you and your family. Keeping your fluid's up is the priority which can be hard when vomiting. So our team will do what we can to implement some idea's that you can take home with you and hopefully avoid another hair raising rush in here."
"That'd be good."
I nodded.
"I don't remember anything up until I got here, but I know I worried the hell out of a lot of people."
"That's because they care about you. You're lucky to have people like that. Imagine being in your situation and being alone?"
It sent chill's down my spine just thinking about it.
"If I was alone I could be seriously sick by now."
I whispered.
Doctor Legend nodded.
"If not dead."
I felt my eyes bug wide open.
Unconsciously, my hand went to rest over my lower stomach.
Does this mean Blayze and my family already understood this and I was the only dumbass who didn't think I was in that much trouble?
Well crap.
Doctor Legend pushed to his feet.
"Now I'd better get on with my round's."
"Thanks for the chat."
I told him.
And I meant it.
Doctor Legend shot me a drool worthy smile.
"I promise you'll be the first to know when you can go home and breathe that fresh farm air."
"I miss my horse."
Just thinking of Phoenix made my heart clench.
"And my kangaroo."
Poor little Joey.
Mum's been looking after him for me.
Izac, Jace, Hazel and Lily are loving helping care for the curious, bouncy Joey.
Doctor Legend's eyes widened.
"You have a legitimate Kangaroo?"
I couldn't help but laugh.
"Why do you seem so surprised?"
"I wasn't aware people have Kangaroo's for pet's!"
I laughed once again.
"Most people don't. It's kinda accidental that I've got one. I guess the hormone's made me sentimental for him when Blayze hit his Mum on the road."
Doctor Legend clicked his finger's to emphasise his enlightening.
"Oh so it's a Joey!"
I nodded.
"Yes."
He raised a questioning brow.
"And Blayze is?"
I felt my cheek's warm a little.
"Blayze is the one who drove insanely fast to get us here yesterday."
I explained.
"Aha!"
Doctor Legend exclaimed.
"Yes, I seen him yesterday. I remember him from the start of the year too, when they raced you in here. You really should stop making a habit of winding up in hospital you know."
"I know."
I nodded.
"He's also madly in love with you, right? I guess this pregnancy deal would be quite the situation."
I felt my cheek's flame.
"N-no he- he's not-"
Doctor Legend grinned like he caught me out.
I avoided looking at him.
A thought occurred to me.
Wait.
His word's about the 'pregnancy situation' didn't quite fit.
"Umm... Doctor Legend?"
"Yes?"
"Blayze is the Father."
Dawning registered on the Doctor's face.
Suddenly he smiled.
Okay...
What is this guy, psychic?
"Something tell's me this child is gonna be one fun person to be around."
I felt my cheek's flame.
"I'll be in to check on you again later Bailey."
With that, Doctor Legend turned on his heel and walked out of the room.
My phone buzzed on the mattress.
I picked it up and unlocked it.
Blayze: iMessage: 8:40AM: 1 image.
Excitedly, I unlocked the phone and opened the conversation.
I tapped on the photo to bring it up to full size.
My heart melted.
Phoenix stood at the fence to the working horse paddock, golden ear's pricked and looking absolutely beautiful.
Sitting in front of the fence and either side of Phoenix was Azlan and Zeus.
We miss you was captioned into the image.
I backed out of the image and typed to Blayze.
Me: iMessage: 8:41AM: Thank you 😘😘
My phone buzzed.
Blayze: iMessage: 8:41AM: How are you this morning?
Smiling, I shook my head.
Me: iMessage: 8:42AM: All ob's are good just seen Dr Legend he's gonna let me know when I can come home 😊
Blayze: iMessage: 8:42AM: That's good. Letting you out today?
My heart sunk a little.
Because I already knew the answer wasn't today.
Unfortunately.
Me: iMessage: 8:43AM: Unfortunately he's already said it won't be today 😔
I waited on a reply buzz.
But suddenly, in my hand, the phone screen changed and Blayze's name was plastered across the top.
I stared at the screen a moment, surprised.
Then I got myself into gear and slid the answer bar across and held the phone to my ear.
"Hey."
I greeted.
"Hey. What exactly aren't you telling me?"
"Uhh...what do you mean?"
I haven't not told him anything!
"You just told me all is good but now the Doctor isn't gonna let you out until at least tomorrow?"
Oh.
That.
"I don't really get it, but I'm honestly doing okay."
I promised.
"They just wanna keep me on the fluid's. I was sick a couple time's this morning too. They want to devise a 'plan' to help me keep hydrated when I go home."
"Right."
"Everything is okay."
I promised.
I heard him sigh.
"Good."
I decided to change the subject.
"What are you up to?"
Blayze made a frustrated sound.
"I'm about to go out and fix a fucking pump the boy's didn't get right the first fucking time."
Uh oh.
As a farmer and a good guy, Blayze shut's up and does what he need's to do.
But I know he hates doing shit like pump's.
Almost as much as he hates fencing.
"Doesn't take a genius to work out you're not happy about it."
I couldn't help but smile.
"Course I'm not! I've got my own shit to get done. But no. I get to go and fix other peoples' fuck up's."
I groaned.
"Please just suck it up and do it! No teasing people for their incompetence and no punching anyone."
I requested.
"Oh you just want to take away all my fun don't you."
Blayze said sarcastically.
"No. I'm just not gonna be there to cool everything down."
Blayze sighed.
"Righto. I'll behave. Hopefully."
"Do it."
I urged.
"Well I guess the sooner I get out there, the sooner it can be over with."
"This is true."
"I'll talk to ya later."
Blayze told me.
I bit my tongue to refrain from asking if he was going to be coming to the hospital later.
It's not like the place is just down the road.
I couldn't face hearing the word 'no' so i chose to keep my mouth shut.
"Talk to you later."
I agreed.
"Later."
He bade.
"Bye."
I quietly told him.
"Bye."
I pulled the phone from my ear and hung up.
