Chapter 23
The sky was dark, but I could see all the stars perfectly
It was peaceful, late, but I liked it
“You’re up late”
I turned to see Reece, ruffling up his hair
His boxers were low, the only part of clothing on his body apart from some of his bracelets
I shrugged, looking back at the sky “Couldn’t sleep”
“So you decided to sit out on my balcony”
“I did”
Reece sat next to me, watching the stars
“I’m glad you’re here” he whispered
I smiled and took his hand “I’m glad you brought me along”
He smiled back at me
“I hope I didn’t ruin Christmas for you guys, I just lost it after I saw Roxie and you behind the house”
I sighed and tipped my head back, looking up at the higher stars
We were silent for a moment, his thumb tracing letters over the skin on the back of my hand
“What you thinking about?” he whispered, his words smoking like clouds in the cold early morning air and curling over our heads before disappearing
“My mum and dad”
He traced the word family onto the back of my hand and squeezed it gently
“What about them?”
“That I want to call them, to tell them I miss them, that I love them” I sighed
“But?”
“But I know how it will end, they’ll tell me I was wrong for quitting school, criticize my job, expect an apology and when I argue they’ll yell and hang up, they’ll even criticize you now that it’s out that were dating, they most likely know”
He frowned “So, if we were to last and years down the track I wanted to ask your dad for permission to marry you”
My eyes widened and he jumped up in his seat “If”
I nodded “Continue”
“If I wanted to ask, would he meet me, would he approve of us?”
I shook my head “No, He wouldn’t, he wouldn’t want to meet the boyfriend of his drop out daughter and he wouldn’t approve of me being with a boy with in what his opinion is a ‘stupid unstable job’”
“Oh”
I squeezed his hand “Don’t take it personally babe, my dad doesn’t agree with a lot of things I do, I was his baby girl and now I’m his disappointment”
“What about your mum?”
“She might be willing to meet you, but it’s kind of the same, they prefer stable, well paying, reliable jobs, educated men and strong family values”
