CHAPTER 04: Letter S

STORM

I REMEMBERED watching a movie with my mom and cousins sa probinsya, it was a romantic movie which is hindi ko type. Gusto ko mga science fiction saka mga anime, but for the sake of them, nakinood na lang ako.

Naalala ko doon sa movie, naiwan ng babaeng bida 'yong notebook niya sa kotse nu'ng lalaki. So the male protagonist finds a way para maibalik 'yong notebook sa female protagonist...and so their story begins.

Natatawa na lang ako kapag naaalala ko ang kabobohan ko.

I purposely left my handkerchief inside Sabrina's car. It's obviously mine because it's embroidered with my name "Storm", si Lola ang nagtahi niyon.

Pero lumipas ang buong bakasyon, September na ngayon, isang buwan simula nang mag-start ang first sem ng third year at nakapag-pre lim na rin kami, hindi na siya nagparamdam. Wala na kong nabalitaan tungkol sa kanya aside from the fact na third year na rin siya ngayon sa Accountancy.

Isa pa, umuwi kasi ako sa province kaya wala talaga kong balita.

Nababahag din ang buntot ko everytime na pupuntahan ko ang facebook profile niya. Pipindutin ko lang ang Add friend na button hindi ko pa magawa. Halos wala rin naman siyang public post kaya struggle ding mang-stalk.

Ang mga public post niya mga advocacies and principles in life na ang dami laging share. Other than that, wala na.

Hindi na siya mawala sa isip ko simula noon.

"Esquiñas!" Halos lumabas ang kaluluwa ko nang tawagin ako ng Prof namin.

"Sir, present po!"

Nagtawanan ang mga kaklase ko. Anong nakakatawa? Nilingon ko si Niccolo at literal na napa-face palm siya.

"Anong present? Attendance ba 'to?!"

Lalong lumakas ang tawanan ng mga kaklase ko. Saka ko lang nakita ang hawak na index card ni Sir Alfonso. Biglang bumalik ang kaluluwa ko sa katawan ko. Nagpapa-recitation nga pala si Sir at mukhang index card ko ang nabunot niya. Kung saan-saan kasi lumilipad ang utak ko.

Tumayo ako. "Sorry, Sir. Can you repeat the question po, Sir?"

Halos namatay na naman katatawa ang mga kaklase ko. Ano na naman bang ginawa ko?

Huminga nang malalim si Sir na parang nagtitimpi sa akin. "Wala pa akong tinatanong," giit niya.

Shoot!

"S-Sorry po, Sir."

Lumipas ang ilang segundo na tila ba pinapakalma niya ang sarili at saka nagtanong. "Informal settlers located in the remote area near Manila Bay has a crowded living condition, wherein residents, approximately 20 families, are using common restroom. During medical mission of physicians, these physicians noticed number of cases of children with high grade fever, abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhea, and dehydration. They got stool samples from the children and was examined. Stool culture shows gram negative rods, non-motile, non-lactose fermenting. What could be the disease present in these children and what species is seen in the stool culture? Support your answer."

There was a total silence. Nobody expected a case this recitation dahil hindi naman nagpapa-recite ng case si Sir Alfonso. Sa exam oo, pero sa recitation hindi.

But I stood on the same ground and answered the question with all my might. "The disease of this children is bacillary dysentery po, Sir, and it is caused by Shigella dysenteriae." Medyo pumiyok pa ko. Habang sinasabi niya ang case kanina ay hinihimay ko na sa utak ko ang mga pertinent info. "First, these children are living in Philippines. Shigellosis occur worldwide however more particular in Asia, Africa, and America, specifically in places with overcrowding condition and poor sanitation. Second, the symptoms shown by the children fits the description of bacillary dysentery. Third, Shigella species are gram negative bacilli, they are non-motile, and non-lactose fermenting."
