Chapter Twenty Two
Drew
Problems are like washing machines. They twist us, spin us, but we will come out cleaner and brighter than before...at least that's what my grandpa once told me.
Yet in this case I think I came out with even more stains. And the one stain that seemed the biggest even got bigger.
Levi, Austin, and Nate finally agree with me after countless times to head back on out. We will have to get gas eventually though.
Austin parks the car at the front of the pumps to a Sinclair then shoots us with the game plan.
"Okay i will go in and get some goodies for the road. You guys can get breakfast at the Jack in Box down the street. Drew get me anything you are getting. I just know you won't get anything that is gross-"
Nate interrupts him by saying,"or anything that will give him diarrhea."
"Okay. Let's not talk about it, "Levi blurts out, "it was one time. It's not my fault he has a poor digestive system."
"Guys," I butt in, "let's focus. We have a long road ahead of us still."
Austin nods in agreement and then continues, "then we will get gas to go. Be on our merry way to Idaho faster than you could say, 'my ex girlfriend loves me still.'"
Yeah thank you for the confidence boost Aus, you're a big help.
Once we break off, Nate and Levi won't stop arguing about whether or not i can get a good meal for Austin.
I myself can't stop thinking about the girl I loved.
Still love.
We get over to the rundown resturaunt and ring the bell that is on the counter.
A bright smiled girl walks up to the counter and greets us, "hello! What can I get you today?"
We end up buying the cheapest, most spicy free food we could get. We get a couple of the sandwiches I am sure Austin will approve. Then we sit down once we get our tickets.
After a minute of waiting, my cell phone starts to vibrate indicating some one is calling me.
Austin?
I pull the green side over and answer, "What's up?" I furrow my eyebrows. There has to be something wrong.
I see Nate and Levi look over at me so I put my phone in the middle and have Austin on speaker phone.
"We kind of have a dilemma." His voice cracks in the other end. Only meaning terrible news i regrett of believing.
"What kind of dilemma?" Levi asks to the phone and then what comes next I can't believe I am hearing.
"The car was stolen."
Nate raises his eyebrows and it seems like he is the only one of us three that can process what is happening, "what do you mean the car was stolen?"
"I mean one moment the car was there. And yes I locked it. And now it is gone."
"Did you see who took it?"
Levi and I look at each other. I shake my head in frustration and sigh, "No Nate that is kind of why he called us."
'Did you call the police?"Levi asks.
"Yes," Austin answers, "and I just informed the cashier, they are trying to see who took it but the guy who took it just ran with it like he hot rod it or something."
I space out for a moment or two without any impulse of my surroundings. I can't believe we have already made it this far and there is no way now. We are less than five hundred miles to her right now. Less than.
I get up after I shake my head and blink my eyes into reality, "we can do it," I hear Nate say, "we can still make it."
"How?" Levi asks, 'we don't have a car.We have to report it stolen and stick around."
"No we can do it. I can stick around and you three can try something else-"
Levi raises his voice in anger as if he can read my mind about doing the sane, "Nate we can't make it if we have no transportation."
That makes him silent for a moment.
"I'm sorry," we hear a voice come from the counter "I can't help but over hear your problem. I know how to help."
What's with girls knowing their way around anyway? Like what the hell.
"My uncle owns a bike shop maybe he can try to work a deal for you."
"What kind of deal?" Austin's voice is heard from the phone. I look outside she he is out there. He is panting like he ran over to us.
He opens the door as the girl gives our food. She replies,"he gives bike rentals."
"Like motorcycle bikes?"
-------
"There is no way we are taking these." Austin replies as he looks at the bicycles, "one is a two seater? Like how are we suppose to do this?"
"Teddy and Amy did it off of Good Luck Charlie," Nate says and we all look at him, "right I'm the only one that gets it."
"Dude they didn't have to ride almost five hundred miles to get to the destination,"Levi remarks and then huffs out a breath as he looks at the bike again.
Nate slumps his shoulders down but the man puts his hand on them, "don't frown boys. My brother drives a greyhound to Lewiston."
"How far is your brother?" Austin asks and crosses his arms.
"About forty clicks down the road."
All of us guys look at each other.
Nate puts his hand out, "I'm in on staying around for the police report. My name is on the rental car contract too since all four of us were going to drive. "
"We technically only need one witness," Levi says and puts his hand on top of Nate's.
"It's a long stretch. For real. We might get in trouble but," Austin puts his hand on top of Levi's. "But it's for Drew and Violet."
All three of the guys look at me like I have a decision to make. I got us into this mess. I can't believe they are sticking around for me.
"Well Dirksen?" Austin asks and raises one eyebrow.
I put my hand on top of theirs, "let's go see her."
I feel my stomach ache already thinking of the road. But hey if Amy and teddy could do it.. we can too.
It's just that was for fictional characters and we all know we can totally die since none of us have trained to go so far.
"If this isn't the most romantic shit you've ever seen i don't know what else could be," the man says and then goes to his counter to get the contracts of the bikes ready.
Problems. The only solution to them is getting out of your comfort zone. But what is the difference between comfort zone and knowing what is possible?
I dont think i can stand any more problems.
