Chapter Twenty Four

Drew

Left foot. Right foot. Left foot. Right foot.

Having the same timing and being in synch with rising. Levi is going so fast. Way faster than I want to him. Austin is riding next to us as we are all pedaling down the stretch of the highest. This highway no one is on. Not a single car passes us.

We are getting closer to the border line. We have to. I stop pedaling.

Levi stops and looks at me. Austin notices and stops.

"Sorry I just need a breather," I say with an exhalation," Austin nods  and then grabs his water bottle from the backpack he  has.  He tossed one to Levi and I.

"How far have we gone?" I ask then Austin gets his phone out.

"Ugh twenty. I feel like a thousand pounds."

We all groan at the same time.

I can't believe I have gotten us into this. They didn't have to do this. Nate didnt have to stay back and try to figure out everything. I think I have good friends with me and I didn't think so at first. Even with beginging of this trip I was so afraid to be their friends still. I have lied to them. Then I lied about lying to them. Like I cant stop.

I dont deserve their friendship but just like what happened this summer I dont think they mind.

For once after Austin died I can breathe again. Feel the I could have with my almost brothers.

We pedal down the road and come to a small outside gss station with a cafe. We sit down in the chairs and leave the two bikes standing next to each other in reach. We sit there in the shade of the umbrella as we all are probably wondering the same thing:

If this is actually even possible.

Austin goes to the register which is behind an inside booth and then comes back out with a lady. She takes our order  and while doing so I couldn't help but think: She doesn't look like Violet? Doesn't sound like her? Seem like her? Am i moving on while I am on the way of seeing her?

Austin sits down fully and then smiles at Levi, "so good news," he then looks at me, "there is a hotel about two miles down. Kim here has a mother running the hotel and I told her our situation. If we tell Kims mom we might be able to stay there tonight."

He grabs his straw and then pokes it to get it of the wrapper. He puts it in his water and sips down.

"Tonight?" I ask and then furrow my eyebrows as I look down at the table.

"Yeah I mean we can get there at the bus tomorrow night. It's scheduled for like six pm anyway. I mean we all are beat. Its been a long day of just worry and pedaling. Repeat, "Levi says and does the same thing with his straw.

I am putting way to much pressure on them. That's what is going on. I feel so bad for making them do this.

We sit there as we wait for our food and during the eating no one speaks a word. I wish Nate was here. He would lighten the mood by saying something that is ridiculous somehow. Like: "this hotdog is only for me dawg", "why does mustard have such a wierd smell to it. I mean I dont even like mustard", or "anyone have a spare napkin?"

But here we are in silence. When we are finished we thank Kim for her kindess and peddle to the hotel in less than an hour. We use some of our saving money on a room as her mother did give us a discount and we head to it.

When we are in and the door is locked Austin says the first things. And man does it feel like  a punch after he says, "what are you going to say to Violet if and when we get there?"
