A few months after the pool, or maybe even a year, Brady and I sort of lost contact with each other over the phone. After a few months of hopeless hoping, I gave up on the fact that I actually loved him and accepted that I should move on. Until the Dress. Yes, The Dress. The Dress that actually rattled the nation for it's colors and horrible photo angle. I saw it at around one or two in the morning and I had to work the next day and my brother was asleep, so I decided not to wake him up; I did anyway and he said the Dress was gold and white. I said gold and white too. He went to sleep and I really, really hesitated to ask Brady what he saw.
I finally text him after ten minutes, asking what color it is. He replies with black and blue. "How do you see that?" I ask.
"I don't know. What do you see?"
"Gold and white." I reply.
"Oh. Wanna play Portal?" He doesn't really care and after what he asks, I don't either. I run upstairs to my Xbox 360 and call him on the phone. It's some mission I had never played before because I was so used to one player missions. "Maddie, no! When I jump, press the button!"
"But it's so far and I have to get it done in like half a second!" I say, trying to whisper because my parents are asleep. He laughs. "Let's just try." We do, at least ten or fifteen times. We finally get it done and move on. We just laugh and help each other out the entire phone call and game. I look at my phone time and it's almost four in the morning. I'm shaking partially because it's cold, but mostly because I'm talking to my favorite person. "Brady, I'm gonna go to sleep."
"Me too." It's quiet for a second and then he yawns. "Goodnight, Maddie."
"Goodnight, Brady." I say, laying down on my side with my phone next to my head. No one hangs up. This is literally right after I read The Fault in Our Stars, so you could imagine how happy I am that I'm having my own 'third place' moment. "I love you." He says. I smile and I'm gonna be honest with you, a teeny tiny tear falls from my eye. "I love you too." I say, quieter than ever.
"Goodnight."
"Night."
And we hang up.
