Chapter Four

The next morning, Levi and Pin did not come to visit Avarice. They usually would have, but they had arrived in the evening. The sun had already set, and Pin was different this time. Avarice knew something was wrong before they even came inside.

Levi came into the castle, clutching his sister to his chest. She had been shaking wildly, almost convulsing, and Avarice told him to take her to the parlour. She almost looked like she was having a panic attack rather than a vision.

Levi looked like he was panicking too.

Pin had always been sensitive to the darkness. She could feel the shadows like they were attached to her, clinging to her skin and her very soul. The shadows that she spoke of as she told Avarice what she had seen in a shaky voice were called "Mares", short for "Nightmares".

The Mares had never entered Avarice's world, simply because they had no reason to. They were a special form of demon, the ones that try their very best to steal the souls of the mortals. Since there were no living souls in the Reaper's dimension, they never had any interest in forcing their way in. They had never even attempted to invade Avarice's world, but that was about to change.

It was very, very rare for Pin to be able to sense the Mares. Tonight, they were close. They weren't just near their world, they were about ready to break in.

Pin hated the shadows. They made her feel like she was losing her mind, and sometimes, she looked like it. She was on the floor, shaking with her knees pulled up to her chest. She had her eyes clenched shut, her hands covering her ears as if blocking out a person's screams. She said words that didn't make any sense, and phrases that seemed and sounded darker than Avarice's very soul. One word, however, made perfect sense.

"Mikaelson's," she said in between a jumble of gibberish. She continued to say the words, ones that didn't make any sense to neither Levi nor Avarice. "Mikaelson's," she said again. She said the same name over and over again.

"Pin!" Avarice said, taking her hands from her ears and clutching them in her own. "You need to tell me what you see."

"Mares," she whispered. "They want the Mikaelson's."

Avarice looked to Levi, her eyes wide. Then she stood, and Aspin clapped her hands back at her ears, continuing to rock back and forth. Avarice wanted nothing more than to help Aspin, but the Mikaelson's were in the Reaper's world because of her. They were her responsibility. She needed to protect them.

The Mares wanted the Mikaelson's. Since they were born in the mortal world, they were considered to be mortals. Therefore, they had mortal souls that the Mares would absolutely love to devour.

"Stay with Pin; I'll be back soon," she said, then ran to her room.

She opened the closet, and after ripping away a panel from the inside, she took her scythe out from its spot in the hidden compartment in the wall. With one flick of her wrist, her body disintegrated into black ashes, and went into the wind. Her gas-like form darted towards the mansion, going over the trees so quickly that she hit leaves and pine needles that then fell to the ground. When she reached the mansion, she landed on the steps to the garden. Her body went back into its solid state, and she went inside.
