Chapter Four- A Few Answers

Rainella POV

I’m curious; partially still frightened, but I had a feeling that I would be frightened for many years to come…

I’m exhausted… speechless and ready to break but I needed answers, or at least something else to think about other than the basement.

“How did you find me? Better yet… why were you looking in the first place actually?” Pain seemed to color his face and it also held a frown.

He cut his eyes to Bailey then Michael “Hey Bailey, Mikey you guys can try to rest if you want… I know you’re tired, it’s okay to sleep okay boys?"

They looked at me, then their surroundings carefully and nodded their heads before shifting to get comfortable.

As we leveled out and almost 10 minutes had passed the same woman that opened my door walked over to Kayla and began lifting her shirt or well rags really and before she could do more I ripped off my seat belt, -limping while hissing out in pain from my battered up ankle- planning to stop her. She realized my intentions quickly and told me that she was a healer; still not dropping my guard she explained that Kayla was in pain and had a dislocated shoulder and maybe a few cracked ribs. I looked for Mason but he was already walking towards me with what was a pretty big medical first aid kit.

“Rainella, my name is Abby okay? Speaking as if I was a flight risk, or about to go into shock. I want to help her so I’ll tell you what I’m doing as I do it okay? How does that sound?” Mason on his knee near Kayla as well encouraging me to say yes.

Slowly nodding my head and answering “Y-yes, o-okay.”

“Okay first I’m going to give her shots one to sleep the other to numb her shoulder so when I put it back in place it wont hurt as much. Then I am going to try to mend her ribs as much as I can then tape them up. When I am done with that I noticed that she would need a few stitches on her back, face, forehead and there is a lot of blood on her right pant I will look there to see if she is injured there as well. Finally her ankle is very swollen so I will heal her there last... it will not be mended perfectly but I’m more or less trying to lessen her pain. ”

I watched closely as she did everything she said she would and slowly I could see Kayla’s body was already looking in better shape than she was when we were in that basement. My children and I were skin and bones, I knew that but I also knew that he had broken many of their and my bones so they caused more pain.

Abby’s bottom lip was trembling, I saw her take a deep breath and latch her teeth onto it, and eyes seemed to be watery like she was holding in tears.

When Abby was going to remove Kayla’s pants I saw Mason get up, walk back and sit down where we once were. I heard gasp when she saw my daughters’ inner thigh.

My children all had scars, constant reminders not only to themselves, me as well. Mark after mark, a constant physical reminder of what a terrible mother I was and unable to protect them. After each “session” with the kids he would place a mark somewhere on their body. Most times it was on their thighs or their backs.
