"So...Sofia?!" the owner asked.

"Da...Daniel?!"

"What on EARTH are you doing here?!" Daniel asked. "I... I just moved in. What are YOU doing here?!" Sofia replied. "I LIVE here, you moron! Wait, you mean to say that you are currently living in front of me and I have to put up with you all summer?! Holy mother!" Daniel said. "I'm sorry!" Sofia exclaimed. She knew she hadn't done anything wrong but with Daniel, apologising was always the safer bet.

Daniel sighed. "Fine. If you want to move here, fine. Just, LEAVE ME ALONE!" he yelled, before slamming the door in her face. Sofia froze. She was now living opposite that jerk?! No way!

She made her way back to her home, cookies still in hand. Her mother glared at her as she walked in. "WELL?! WHAT WENT WRONG?!" she spat. "No...nothing! He just didn't want to be disturbed," Sofia came up. "Yeah, right. Maybe it's because he was too disgusted with you, bitch!" her mother sneered.  Her mother grabbed a broomstick and threw it to her, slamming her in her arm. "I MAY have realised that the yard is getting messy. Sweep it," her mother ordered, shoving her. "But..."Sofia started. "NOW!" her mother yelled.

She scurried outside and started to sweep the large yard. The neighbours passing by just sneered at her, thinking that she was just doing that for punishment for misbehaving or according to the lies they were told, just 'giving her parents problems big enough to blow their minds'. She didn't. All the work she was doing was just plain slavery. As she worked, she didn't realise a pair of eyes staring down upon her.

Daniel looked through his bedroom window and sneered. 'That coward. How she ever summoned the courage to crush on me, I have no idea,' he thought. He turned away from the window, trying to ignore the tiny hint of worry implanted in his heart. Looking at Sofia, working in the blazing afternoon sun, he couldn't help but think that was he too harsh with her just now? Those cookies DID look good and he was starting to regret not taking one. It was just a cookie after all.

Daniel certainly was an introvert and a keep-to-himself guy, but he certainly wasn't cruel or like the other neighbours, too trusting, too believing. His past turned him into the person he was today. He definitely did not want everyone else to know his secret.

*flashback

"You, boy!" his father called, "Come here!" The 7-year-old Daniel walked to his father timidly. "I'm bored today. Let's have some fun, shall we?" his father continued. Daniel gulped. He knew his dad's definition of fun all too well.

Sorry, couldn't help but put this in. 😐 Anyway...

Daniel walked over to his father and he shoved his head, leaving him bending over. Daniel winced as the whip was brought upon his bare flesh. A punch and a few kicks followed the whips, leaving Daniel severely injured. He was curled up on the floor in a foetal position, desperately trying to silence his whimpers.

His mother came into the room as soon as his father left and nursed his wounds. He loved her, she was the only one who cared.

Daniel had silent tears running down his face as he recalled the memory. When his parents died, he honestly felt both happy and sad. When his parents died, sure he felt sad and grief striken, but he actually felt happy the tyrant was dead. He felt guilty and ashamed for that. His father died and he felt HAPPY for that!

On that day, he swore he would never let another human being be treated as he was. Blinking furiously, he turned back to the window. From there, he studied Sofia again. Her frail form, the way she was sweeping the yard furiously as though she was scared of something, and most importantly, the hurt, haunted look in her eyes.

"Hmm..." Daniel said, "Something is off with that girl. I mean, the way she ran off just now, it reminded me of me."

"I must find out more about her."
