Chapter sixteen

The weekend passed in front of my eyes under tons of homework. Since we were in December the finals were coming.

Monday, I went early to the University to meet a coworker at the library. We worked on a group project for a few hours till my first class I had in common with Soukvilay and Dorcas. When our class was done, we headed to the students' relaxation room. As soon as we came, we took a table and some chairs then sat in silence busy individually on our phones while waiting for the other girls. Since we weren't talking to each other, I texted Darell to know if he wanted to go eat somewhere with me. He accepted and told me that he was going to text me as soon as his class finished. While I was Answering "ok" I heard Kaneasha and Estephania's voices. As usual, they were speaking loudly with a lot of intonations. Their spirits waked up ours.

We started to talk and laugh till Kaneasha, Estephania, Soukvilay and I looked at each other to know who was going to ask Dorcas the question to know what happened with Hakim when they left his birthday party. After a few seconds of non-verbal communication later, we voted for Kaneasha.

"So?" She simply said looking at her from head to toes.

"So what?" Dorcas replied with a lot of attitudes. We throw at her annoyed faces.

After a long silence, she said, "Girls we didn't do it"

"Really?" Replied Kaneasha

"Yes, really!" We all looked at her suspiciously. We didn't believe her. She laughed and said to us "Okay, I'm going to give you a summary! After he kissed me when I arrived at the party, we went to the bathroom and he basically told me that he likes me, but he's not yet ready to get back in touch. Since he doesn't want to lose me, he suggested that we go slowly and get to know each other better."

"Ok girl, I see you! But to change the subject since the shooting, there have been too many changes in our lives! Starting with, what happened to Cassius? Is he coming back to our school? And why the hell no one was arrested except Darrell's brother not like I want them to be arrest but hello?" said Kaneasha

Following Kaneasha, I explained to the girls that Cassius stayed in intensive care for 3 weeks. I also told them that according to my social worker as soon as he was out of the wood, he received a restraining order from the judge that I asked and the reason he hasn't come back to our university is that his gang has turned against him since they don't tolerate rape. They threatened his life and his family's lives, so he was forced to change school. Not only he also had to change district to disappear. It's was so dangerous for him and his family the last week they lived in our neighbourhood that Quincy's father sent two police cars, including his, in front of his house even if what Cassius did to me was against his values. I also told the girls that Malik and some of his friends that Cassius's friends have denounced having seen that night, after the shooting, were questioned by the police. Thanks to Quincy's father and Cassius who refused to file a complaint against them, the judge didn't send them to jail but he obligated them to do some community works.

After my explanation, we kept talking about everything and nothing. Till Dorcas started to stare at me.

"You're different," she said after a moment.
