Chapter Fifteen
Nick let out his breath on a contented sigh and pulled Aiden tighter into his arms. Aiden moaned and then Nick heard the birds singing and felt the hay digging into his cheek.
Shit! They'd fallen asleep. Together. Cuddled up. In the barn loft. Now it was morning. Shit!
Nick opened his eyes and looked out the loft window. It was still fairly dark outside and the sun hadn't yet risen completely. Maybe not all hope of getting out of the barn unseen was lost.
"Aiden, you gotta wake up," he whispered, nudging the sleeping man gently. Aiden's face was smashed against his chest and Nick was fairly certain he'd been drooled on. A smile curved his lips as he chuckled quietly. His man was cute that was for sure.
A horse snorted below them and Nick shook his head. His man needing to get the hell off of him and back to the bunkhouse was yet another fact that Nick was sure about.
"Aiden, honey, ya gotta wake up."
Aiden moaned again and then his brown eyes fluttered open and he gave a sleepy smile as he looked up at Nick. "What did you call me?"
"Honey. Do you not want me to call you that?" Nick asked, feeling a bit awkward. He was out of practice when it came to pillow talk.
"No.. um... I like it. You can call me whatever you want," Aiden replied, his ears reddening. "You should probably just stick with Aiden though when folks are around."
"Speaking of folks being around—" Nick stated as he sat up and Aiden moved away from him. "It's morning and we're still in the barn loft."
"Oh no," Aiden glanced around and began to chew furiously at the inside of his cheek.
"What we talked about last night; I want you to know that I meant every word I said. You aren't alone anymore. It'll be easier to catch Brody and Liz together if we wait until this evening to talk to them. I guess we'll probably have to tell Jacob too but it can wait..."
"Or we could just saddle two horses right now and be gone." Aiden offered weakly.
Nick should his head. "No. I done told you that I'm not much of a runner unless I have no other choice. I won't run just yet."
"Probably should get running to the bunkhouse though before we get caught."
"That would probably be a good idea—"
"I'll put your horses up," Wendell's voice floated in from outside. "You two are probably wore out."
"Thanks Wendell. I sure hope we get this fence line situation figured out soon. I ain't young enough anymore for these all-nighters," Frank replied.
Nick winced. Too late. Clearly Kent and Frank were returning from night watchman duty and now Wendell was coming in the barn. Aiden turned a panicked gaze to him and Nick just shrugged and scooted further away from the edge of the loft—maybe they could avoid being seen and sneak out in a while.
"There's only one kind of all-nighter I like to pull and that's with a saloon girls legs wrapped around my waist," Kent agreed.
"That's a good place to be," Frank admitted. "Lost between a saloon girl's legs..."
The conversation between the two of them faded into the distance and Nick heard Wendell leading two horses into the barn. He put his fingers to his lips to indicate to Aiden the need for silence which earned him a rather impressive eye-roll.
