I yanked the earplugs out of my ears and closed my eyes. Collapsing backwards on the tiles, the moon reflecting on the ground all around me. Heaving a great sigh, I opened my eyes slowly, ready to head back inside.
As my eyelids flickered open, a deep viridian flooded my gaze.
"Whoa!" I leapt back, clutching at my chest.
He erupted in laughter, holding his stomach he rolled around on the roof, pointing at me.
"Your face was hilarious!"
I groaned, "This is the second time you've done this to me!"
He winked, "It's because your reaction is priceless."
I rolled my eyes, "Good to see my fright gives you a good laugh."
"It does," he replied smugly.
I lay down on the bricks again with a resigned sigh.
"What brings you here, stranger?" my voice sounded sharper than I liked it.
"Stranger?"
"Well, I haven't seen you in a while," I added quietly.
"Naomi's coming over soon. I'm killing time."
"Ahh, so I'm a distraction when Naomi-chan isn't here?"
Even to my ears, I sounded like a bitter, jealous bitch.
He merely ignored me, and sighed.
There used to be a time where we seemed to be connected at the hip. His house was mine and vice versa. We called each other's parents "Mom" and "Dad". There was a time when there wasn't any awkward silences; we were comfortable in the completeness of the silence.
How I wished time would turn back.
And yet, it just seemed to sluggishly move forward. Every caress blown 100 times it's normal magnification.
I wanted to hurl myself over a cliff.
"It's beautiful, ain't it?" he whispered, his voice muffled by a cloud of condensation.
"I love looking at the stars," I said amicably. "Doesn't it just make you want to wish?"
"Wish?"
"For anything," I breathed. "Anything in the world."
"What would you wish for?"
I looked at him at the corner of my eye.
"For a lot of things. Good grades. Better phone-"
"What do you really want?"
"Someone," I said vaguely.
"You wish for a person?" he sounded interested.
"Who?"
"A guy."
"In our grade?"
"Maybe?"
"What does he look like?"
"A guy."
"KEIRA!"
"What?" I snapped, "Suddenly you're interested in my life again?"
"I was never not," he protested.
"Whatever."
I turned away, wiping the traitorous tears away angrily.
"You don't even care..." I trailed off.
His fingers rubbed the tears as they streamed down my face. I shoved him away.
"Leave!" I didn't want him to see me like this.
"Kei-"
"I said, Leave!" I shouted.
Lights flickered on below me.
"I don't want to talk to you!" I flinched as a glint pierced my vision. But tried to run back towards the open window. I whipped around, but his fingers locked around my arm.
And then he was kissing me.
