Rough hands push me over. I can't move. Falling into the Pit, my entire body feels frozen. I think for my arm to move, but it doesn't respond.

I panic. Heartbeat increases. Sweat dripping. I feel nothing but fear.

How did I get here? The Pit. Damnation. The end.

"That was one of the Emperor's men that brought her." Rough eyes like rough hands, rimmed in red and swollen bruises. "Look at her, smells sweet as tea leaves. Maybe she's one of the concubines of Lord High-and-Mighty."

"No," another voice, gravelly and laced with cruelty, "no, she's far too ugly for that."

Vision cut through by thunder. Pain ramming like a heartbeat, constant throbbing. Other places so hurt that... stopped... all feeling.

The first voice, the rough one, "maybe that's why the Emperor put her in the Pit."

What's happening to me? I'm just... just drifting away.

Laughter, croaking in the darkness. Faces peer out at me, swimming through the white haze of my vision. Move your hand. Move your legs. You've got to get up. You've got to... got to run from here. Escape. Fight.

"No. I heard rumors from when I was up above. Rumors that the Emperor was a boy-lover." Voice laced with cruelty, belonging to a man with a beard. They all have beards. Been here so long. Rotting in the dark, waiting for the ultimate sentence. "Look at her clothes, standard military-issue. The woman's a fighter."

Pulling back, hissing and making wards against me. "Must be a witch."

"That, or an army whore."

Cannot move. Cannot fight.

Mercy.

Mercy.

"How can we tell if she's a witch or a whore?"

Laughter. Laughter. Laughter.

Mercy.

Mercy.

Mercy.

Wait, a voice.

I recognize that voice.

"I AM YOUR GOD."

Kane? You came back.

What's left of my heart fills with happiness.

You came back for me.

And then the world...

...goes...

...black.

Champions (and hello to all my new reading Champions!),

It's not over yet for Ode.

Did you think Kane would abandon her?

Best,
