"Hey Rei, how would you respond if I said I loved you?"
Lifting his head from his lunch, Rei let out a sigh. It was a strange question, considering all Takeshi's lunch talks were about classes or baseball.
But Rei didn't falter.
"Of course, I'd say I love you too!" Rei responded easily, his lips stretching wide and his smile bright and toothy.
Takeshi felt a cupid's arrow jab into his heart.
But that stab came along with another arrow of regret, because he just knows that Rei wasn't talking about the same love Takeshi was speaking about.
"Rei..." he chuckled dryly, "I don't mean love as in 'love' but y'know,"
Takeshi felt himself flush red-- wait, he said that first line absent minded so he didn't feel it, but needing to justify himself now is kinda embarrassing...
"I meant the-" he averted his gaze, "The romantic kind of love, y'know?"
There was a pause in all functions of Ninomiya Rei.
Then Rei just exploded into red, dropping his tamagoyaki and his chopsticks, and altogether failing to compute and wait what did he just-
"Was-Was that...?" Rei, for the first time in a very long while, stuttered, his teeth chattering non stop, his mouth opening and closing over and over again in a mess and at an absolute lost, "...Was that a confession?"
The word made Takeshi grow even redder-- but he wasn't going to cower now-- simply looking away, unable to meet Rei's eyes, he curtly nodded.
Rei's head landed on the table with a light clunk-- and Rei buried his face into his palms.
"Christ, Takeshi," he whined softly, physically unable to speak any louder than a high-pitched whimper. "Could you be any more embarrassing? We're both guys, you know?"
Takeshi had no answer for that.
He just looked to the side, trying to get the heat on his face to quell down.
"Hey, Takeshi," Rei lifted his eyes slightly above, so he could meet Takeshi's eyes again. Rei hid his blush under the desk, his eyes just slightly softened and shakily swerving around all over, nervously.
Seeing that, Takeshi felt his face heat up again.
"I-" Rei spoke up louder, "I like-" his tone just suddenly died down to a mumbled, "--Love," then it just went into a whisper, "...you too..."
After the last syllable Rei just crawled under the desk and curled up in embarrassment.
Takeshi froze.
Wait did I just get-
The guy that always sat beside Takeshi patted him on the shoulder. "Congrats, bro," he said, giving him a thumbs up.
