Alright time for the rant. I believe many wonder why I didn't just get Rei a donor, or get Rei a Mukuro lung replacement for eight years of Rei's life.
Like I've explained his lung and all in the later chapters, but honest to god, I was having trouble coming up with that until just recently.
Why am I doing this to myself? Am I just a stubborn mule that wants excuses for angst?
right, so we'll start from the birth of Rei as a character.
I wanted him to have a bodily defect-- something, that would give the story a stable angst and drama point I can work with. I think I considered cancer at some point, but I wouldn't be able to write that down well so I gave up.
But-- the issue with the KHR fandom is that I lowkey despise all OC creators who make bodily defect OCs. Why such a strong word?
Because all those sad sad ocs are mary sues. Even if their abilities are all balanced and beautiful, there is one thing they fail to realize.
KHR already has a bodily defect character.

This girl. Some people forget that she exists. They forget she's an important character and her story was so important to the all of us. She's the one to inspire all bodily defect OCs.
And what do we do to her?
We bloody UNDERMINE her and make her so unimportant. These OCs SHARE the fate of having illusion organs, but "my oc can do it herself, with her own flames, unlike Chrome who is weak and needs to be pampered and protected like the cute girl she is".
My OC is also SO MUCH SADDER than Chrome and has MUCH MORE ANGST.

Like seriously! Can't we have a character with a Bodily defect that doesn't undermine Chrome??

In conclusion, before I made Rei, I set myself these golden rules I would obey no matter how many plot holes end up surfacing in my story.
1. Rei will suffer on his own, and instant solutions to his condition will not arise. I will keep his lung condition present throughout the story and his healing or his death will only come near the end.
2. Rei will NOT get illusory lungs. The reason being, no Mist users are close enough to help him out. He might have a connection with Mukuro beforehand, but it will NOT be as strong as Chrome's, so Mukuro cannot provide for him until Mukuro is released from prison.
3. Neither Rei nor Drew will have Mist Flames, in the same way that Rei will never have Night Flames.
4. If plot holes arise, Aris, you have until the end of the story to figure something out. You wrote Being 27 on pure instinct you can do this shit c'mon
