It didn't take long until Tina found herself surrounded by men, trying to score with the beautiful foreigner. Annie sat at the bar, finishing up her second glass of wine while looking at the score of the current football game podcasted at the screens. She didn't mind sitting alone unless her friend would disappear somewhere and with someone.
They had two more days to see London and go sightseeing all the tourist traps listed on the traveling brochure. She always wanted to visit the Westminster Abbey, see the Parliament square and watch the London Eye in full lights at night. These three little things had always been there on her Bucket List, things she wanted to see and experience.
"Another Guinness, please," a deep voice drew her out of her thoughts. Annie shifted on the bar stool, trying to feel more comfortable.
"And something for the lady here." He added when the bartender put the glass of beer in front of the man.
Annie sat down her glass, sliding it back toward the elderly man.
"No, no. I am good. But thank you," she replied, keeping her head tall. Two glasses of wine had been enough for her, already giving her a pleasant buzz.
"Ok, that's kind of weird." He sat down beside her, a little bit too close so Annie moved her stool away, trying to get back her personal space.
"Why?"
"Majority of women in this pub would never decline an offer like this. Sorry, not an offer. More like a kind gesture." He spoke with no accent, voice deep and shallow.
"Well, I don't consider myself like other women," Annie replied.
"That you aren't," he took a long swing of his beer and turned to face the young woman beside him. "Jonathan Sweiss, please to meet such a graceful lady." He extended his hand.
"Annie Lancer."
"Nice to meet you, Annie. Are you here alone? I can't imagine you here alone in the pub without someone protecting you from the herd of men."
"No, I do have someone with me." Annie pointed at the direction she thought Tina was, but she didn't see her anymore.
"You are not a local. Am I right?" He asked and she nodded, taking out her phone to find a message from her best friend.
"Left with a gorgeous hunk. Go back to the hotel but don't wait up!"
"You got stood up?" Jonathan leaned over to her and peaked at the phone.
"Yeah," her reply said it all. Once again, she had ditched her for a guy but Annie wasn't feeling mad or anything. She knew how irresistible Tina found them and who she slept with, wasn't her business.
"You need a ride back to the hotel?" He asked next but she didn't want to accept such an offer from a stranger. And since they had picked the closest pub to the hotel, it was just a couple of minutes walk.
"No, thank you." She asked to pay for hers and Tina's drinks, reaching for her wallet.
"And again, I am refused." He laughed, flashing a gorgeous smile that brought a sweet smile on Annie's lips.
"I don't need a ride because our hotel is just a few minutes away. But thank you for an offering. It was sweet."
"Right," he rolled his eyes, taking another swing of his beer, finishing it and putting a 10-pound bill under the edge of his glass. "Let me walk you there then."
Since it had gotten dark outside and she was in a city alone on the street, she nodded. Was it the two glasses of wine or the smoky atmosphere in the pub, she rather fancied a man she had met a few minutes ago to escort her back to the hotel and not wander around all alone.
Outside at the pub, Annie pulled on her jacket and zipped it. She waited at the door while Jonathan went back to his friends before leaving with her. She didn't know if he'd come back but as he shook hands with them, he wouldn't return.
"Ok, ready to go." He threw a grey scarf around his neck and combed through his light hair. "Which way?"
"This way," she held out her arm, showing him the direction back to the hotel.
"Good."
While they walked down the streets, she kept glancing at him from time to time. If he had figured out that she wasn't local, then in her opinion neither was him.
"You're not British?" She asked and Jonathan grabbed her hand, pulling her toward him. She didn't know why he did that until a group of men dressed in black came to their direction. He held her by his side until they were in a safe distance.
"I'm not." He whispered in her ear, watching back to see if the group of guys had walked on.
"American, then?"
"God, no." He huffed out a breath and let her go. Her fingers slipped out of his, as she moved away.
"Perfect English, yet no accent." She mumbled to herself, trying to figure out his nationality. Curiosity was always something that defined her. Jonathan switched sides, coming to walk on her left side.
"I'm German but I have lived in England for twelve years now. It's a long time but it doesn't make me an Englishman or British in any way." He said, his voice deep like always.
"Oh," her eyebrows raised but she now saw the connection between his name and origin.
