AFTER THE ROYAL BALL, the three friends returned to Avonlea — a shining new year waiting ahead of them. Being sixteen years of age, Samantha Darling was ready to return to her classes, and was now back in Canada to stay and finish school.

As for Gilbert Blythe, he was eager to spend two more months traveling at sea with his new friend Sebastian — who he had just recently met on his travels during which Samantha was in London.

Sebastian had promised Gilbert he would take him to Trinidad — where Gilbert had always dreamed of visiting. Of course, Samantha wanted what was best for him — she only wanted him to be happy. So, after a good farewell, Gilbert promised he would be back very soon.

For Samantha, she could only hope that things would return to normal, especially since no one knew about Gilbert and Samantha's relationship — all except for Anne Shirley Cuthbert and Diana Barry.

Furthermore, the entire town now knows about her decent of great wealth — attracting many rich families. She knows she can't tell anyone about Gilbert, but how far will Samantha go if it means the utmost destruction of her most beloved relationship?
