Elijah

Once again, I found myself stepping out of Mariana's Rolls Royce. This time I had been standing in front of Hayley's home, hoping that she'd come outside before I knocked on the door only to explain the reason that I'm here. Unfortunately, she hadn't. She hadn't come outside, so I had to make the first move. Again.

I approached the front door and knocked three times before waiting for an answer. Then there it was. The dark brown door opened and Hope stood there as if she was preparing to walk past me and leave.

"Hope?" I questioned, "is your mother home?"

"Yeah." Hope nodded, pulling a set of keys from the pocket of her light gray sweater that had been under her black leather jacket. "She's in the kitchen and if you don't mind, could tell her that I'm going over to aunt Freya's?"

"Of course." I said. Hope smirked at me sarcastically indicating that she had been using body language to say thank you before she walked over towards Hayley's black Range Rover.

I walked into Hayley's home and closed the door behind me softly. Hope knew the reason that I wanted to speak with Hayley. She practically told me to do it. To apologize to her. So that was exactly what I was going to do, not because Klaus hated me, but because Hope would if I never made amends.

"Hayley?" My soft voice scrapped up the silence in the kitchen as I entered, allowing my eyes to land immediately into Hayley's beautiful honey green eyes. "May I have a word with you please?"

"Sure." Hayley nodded, allowing her ponytail to swing. "But it kind of needs to be quick because I have to make a few runs."

"I—I just wanted to ummm...I was in a box with a dagger in my chest for a while and it seemed as if it were centuries." I spoke, squinted my eyes trying not to get emotional. "Centuries of me staring hell in the face and being burned alive-repeatedly-do you know what that's like?" I asked. "Burning on the inside in fear that the fire will only melt one thing. Your heart?"

By the way Hayley stared at me, I could tell that she either knew what I had been talking about or she hadn't. Which made me wonder, what was her definition of fire burning her insides? Was it those careless words that I said to her or was it the selfish words that Klaus wanted to say to her but hadn't because of me. And I see how history repeats itself now. I am the reason he can't love. I am his obstacle, and until I am over Hayley I intend on keeping it that way.

"I do." Hayley said, breaking the silence. "I do know what that's like, and it's a feeling that I don't ever want to feel again-and if you're here to tell me how much you hate me, I already have more than enough on my plate and I'd rather keep to myself until I can find a way to eat it."

In an attempt to walk past me, I grabbed Hayley's arm gently indicating that I hadn't been finish speaking.

"I apologize." I said, looking into Hayley's eyes as we stood close to one another. "And I have no doubt that Niklaus has told you my reasons for saying those things to you, so I just have to know...." I let go of Hayley's arm and walked closer to her, placing my hand on her cheek and staring into her eyes so that I could force her honesty. "Was I wrong...for protecting myself from a heartbreak that I knew to be tragic?"

Hayley immediately let out a sigh and removed my hand from her face. "Yeah." She said, nodding her head with a serious look on her face. "Yeah actually you were, Elijah. I loved you." She pointed at me, her eyes watering. "And it was you who backed away for no reason. From the beginning, it was you who insinuated that our relationship was doomed." Tears rolled down Hayley's cheeks as she spoke, causing me to clinch my jaws. "We were pure, my love for you was pure, Elijah—and now its-its just gone because you let it happen....in a million years, I would've never left you for Klaus....because I chose you. But you ruined that because you are just as selfish as he is."
