Year 22
30 August
(Part 4)

My father's name was written on
the first page in that notebook.
I snatched the book away from Namjoon before
he could turn to the next page.

I sat down and turned the pages as
gently as possible, as if they'd
crumble between my fingertips.

The notebook, in my father's handwriting,
was an account of his high school
days with his friends.
He didn't write in it every day.

A few months were skipped here and there.
Some pages were unreadable, covered in stains
which I could only assume was blood.

Even so, I saw that my father had
experienced the same things I had.
He'd made mistakes and blunders and
had tried to make up for them...just like me.

He'd recorded his failures in this notebook.
In the end he'd failed.
He'd given up.
He'd been forgotten and his
friends had turned away from him.

He'd betrayed his friends.

The last pages held nothing but smeared ink stains.
The stains had permeated onto the last few
pages of the notebook.
These stains showed my father's failures.
He'd given up.

The wind coming in from the window was cool,
showing time had flown by pretty quickly since I'd
sat down to read the notebook.
It seemed as if it were dawn.

Everyone had fallen asleep on the floor.
I lifted my head to look up at the wall.

Somewhere here I'd seen my father's name accompanied
by something that'd said something like:
"this was where everything started."

As I closed the notebook and funny sensation
traveled through my fingertips and up my arms.
Faint letters began to appear atop the dark ink stains.
Behind the window, a subtle old energy traveled through me.

The sun was going to rise soon.
But until then it would still be nighttime.
And like the tangling of light and dark at dawn,
the grayish letters appeared atop the ink smeared paper.
