All Yoongi's muscle's tensed up and his brain was shutting down. He felt clammy and there was the glisten of a cold sweat appearing on his forehead. His eyes widened as if it was his worst nightmare coming to life right before his eyes.
He knew a normal person would run into his mother's arms after being apart for so long. But he wasn't a normal person, and he didn't have a normal mother-son relationship. Every vibre in his body screamed. Seeing her again felt strange. He knew something was terribly wrong.
One part of him wanted to run to the car and make Mun-Hee drive him as far away from her as possible. But another part of him was curious what made her come here, and maybe even more, how did she know how to find him?
His curiosity won the battle. "Mom? How did you know I was here?" The frightened look had disappeared from his face, but his body was still on edge. His mom took a step in his direction and reached out for his arm. In a reflex Yoongi took a step back, keeping a safe distance between them.
Yoongi could see how his cold reaction caused his mother to look at him with pain in her eyes. He knew that look all too well, she had perfected it over the years. She'd look at him like that after waking up the next morning, realising she had passed out drinking again. Or when she came to my room after I took another beating from Hyung-Woo.
That look was her way of apologizing, but at the same time making me feel guilty for causing her pain. There was nothing loving or emotional about that look, he had learned after a while. It was all a lie, an act to make him believe she still cared, when in reality she only cared about herself.
It took him years to realise that she played him, pretending to be sorry when all she wanted was for me to not come between her and the only thing that she still cared about: alcohol.
Her standing in front of him, still using the same old tricks to get to him, made him realise again how he hadn't just lost his dad the day of his accident but his mom too. The woman standing in front of him was just a ghost of the person she used to be.
"After you visited Shin-Cho last week he got into contact with Hyung-Woo, telling him how you tried to convince him to testify against Hyung-Woo. Since Hyung-Woo knows some of the prison guards working here, he found out that you were coming for another visit today," his mother explained calmly.
"At first he wanted to come over here himself, beat you up to show that you weren't safe anywhere, and that you should just drop the charges before he got even more mad and kill you. But I of course wouldn't let him just kill you like that. You are still my baby. So I convinced him to let me come here and change your mind myself." his mother smiled her sweetest smile.
She was lying. Hyung-Woo knew nothing about this. He would never give up the opportunity to take me down. This was just another one of her schemes to make him believe she loved him and that she would do anything to protect him.
Behind her fake smile and loving eyes lay something else. Fear. She was afraid. Afraid that if he'd win in court, and Hyung-Woo would have to go to jail that she would be left with nothing. The bar would go to one of Hyung-Woo's criminal friends, and he knew for a fact that they would kick her out without thinking twice.
She was here because her safety net was starting to get holes in it. No Hyung-Woo meant no alcohol, and there was nothing she feared more than losing that one thing she had left to keep her going.
Yoongi didn't say anything. He just stared at his mother preparing for whatever lie she was going to tell him next. Mun-Hee tugging at his coat make him break eye contact.
"Yoongi, I don't think it is smart to stay here. Who knows, maybe Hyung-Woo or one of his friends is waiting here for you if this doesn't go as planned," Mun-Hee whispered, trying to keep his mother from hearing.
